this Auditorium last time I was here with an 1893 years ago so it's been very very long time since I've had the pleasure to present in front of me funny birds make yourself happy I work a lot of family here which is one of the places that I consider kind of a home away from home in terms of a presenter so I certainly hope you guys enjoyed the New Perspectives on College and kind of the world College admission so I'm currently working on a book project in that book is titled if it was good enough for us some of the wealthy and Powerful is there anything but he leave what really matters is why when it comes to selecting your pop so we start with the guy who this guy is Richard Branson Richard Branson Hughes Knight fight me and rest your soul do you know what he does for a living he's Sir Richard Grant I don't know old dude I don't know Branson if you guys ever heard of the Virgin label United store Virgin Airlines virgin Cruise Lines Virgin Galactic those of you who purchased the ticket to go to space different version he is the owner of the molten Bowl billionaire in one of the world's greatest philanthropist so where did he go to college Arbor Oxford praise be she did not go to PCC I appreciate that he's a high school. and yet you go to the most powerful entrepreneurs and business people on planet Earth use one of my heroes so let's kind of set the table for what waiting on alienation in the most highly rated highly sought-after most selective top 25 schools in the past year 23 of those 25 pool. Harder to get into than just be you not like it wasn't already nightmare so hard to get into those schools however I all the other schools in America the train said it was either static meaning no real change where it got easier to get in them be here before the number of people in the United States to attend college when using that term loosely I want to go to the gym for 4 year college has dropped precipitously it's been on the decline for over a decade now and it's only accelerating in courtesy of Coke however in the same. Of time you seen the number of applications especially in just the near term go up by 20% all of that true how is this possible Remember the Titans book title tonight presentation good enough for the next two sides are going to give you a sample in this place I mean I want you to ignore the left side for a moment what the current rate is at the school University of Iowa Michigan State University university university Arkansas UNLV at the University of Nevada Las Vegas for those who are not on the dental Northern Michigan Hanover College Tennessee State University of Maine play losers president Mugabe School bright waited a really powerful and talented actor and a guy who owns a professional mortgage company in the Cleveland Cavaliers in 00 of vice president and the CEO Omar and the CEO Starbucks to pull the current price the United States over last Vice President of the United States and Oprah Winfrey you know losses here's some more losers who used what's the name of what I would like a lot of money so when you take a look at this list and by the way this is kind of just a small sampling from the book work that I'm doing there's probably a hundred names that I am the kind of narrow down all went to school that look like this so why am I starting now why am I it's a very simple rule and if you walk away with nothing else but what I have for you you're winning you will make you happy you will need you successful when you turn the power over to that selected for highly selective College I go to Harvard I will be successful but is it because you're a park or is it because your Rockstar good ask you something. What's more important to decide what's more important in a very short amount of time now some of you guys exactly we were like I'm just going to read this light to take it easy Georgetown University's Center on education and the workforce public material in 2019 that examined some 4,500 different two-year and four-year in the United States measure your overall return on investment for Roi at any year intervals from graduation the key findings of the report were number one private colleges and Beaver public counterparts over the lifetime of employment community colleges in some certificate b r a y in a short time sweet dreams poem Bible the third finding was that the highest group of Roi schools are liberal arts colleges earn on average more than $200,000 more than the median income for all off food along Harvard four-year engineering and Technical degrees wallet for your business degree in overall income I'm going to give you an actual answer written up on the board but something is just kind of logical statement for my perspective who gets degrees from liberal arts colleges on those are the kids who are getting English degrees in Philosophy degree using poli-sci degrees in Celsius these are students who think really well right really well and can take lots of different ideas and merge them together to make really interesting softball did you really well right well and feet well it's amazing how much people are actually willing to pay for those services ebony said something about this is her. So the Georgetown data after 10 years these are the 10 highest paying jobs based upon the school people came from can use after graduation anybody anybody get more than zero is this surprising where's my where's Geneva some of the movie with here in just a minute they're just a little late but the idea of return on investment treated equally clear from Justice slide alone think about the logic of what you see here many of these programs birth certificate some of which are K through 12 program BOCES is that you see on this board three times who's your old lady through 12 certificate program in New York state these are people who pay how much money for their education nothing which is primarily what's the average nurse make in New York state thousand hundred thousand return-on-investment right now what happens when you flash to the end of one's career 40 years after you graduated from college well yeah there's there's that's the MIT and Stanford and Harvard and Georgetown all very familiar names right okay the world is going to be okay my belief system is not Troy oh wait a minute Maine Maritime Academy let Merchant Marine Academy should I spend more time in the water is a high school student what's going on Babson College and college C couple hands nice hot entrepreneurial school in the United States has down Babson College wasn't you want to study entrepreneurial I need an entrepreneurial networks better get an application big. Yeah these are all bachelor's degree programs not certificate programs not a associate's degree so call her back after 40 years if you wanted more data on a few slices going to confirm it but my twin is understanding the evidence tells us that the careers the types of jobs that you have might actually be more please where you get your degree don't ask. I have more day I didn't just come here slinging I'm going to make stuff up tonight I'm going to fool you all do I have a real hard data to prove this week so can take a look at the screen here the five highest starting monthly anytime in the 10 popular areas of academic study in business just happen to be from the line and you'll notice that the second or third fourth and fifth items in the list are household names Villanova NYU Carnegie Mellon and you look at the monthly salary a song that debris they're like $1,000 a year and ain't gas Bismarck State College in North Dakota do they have a crack sealing program going on in North Dakota with the question is really what I want you to flip through the next few screen I want you to pay attention to the major and the pay at each of the tender on you guys ready here we go. just want to be a nurse by the way you're the right team Just Dance history by the way I have a degree from UCLA and political and a specialization in Business Administration and I have a master's degree US military history from Cal State University Northridge gomatadors yeah that was not like Hello by the way you can see I'm really using those degrees right now right really stay harder and focus on my poli-sci history of the college counselor history dude are you will you be they're awesome you're broke barely Book car remind me to buy high heat paint ingenuity now I look at the money biomedical engineering okay still pretty good still big Yankee money this is you talking about $3,000 a month different that's $36,000 less per year but I have an extra work biomedical engineering according to the pad psychology, who doesn't like to pick on psychology if anyone in this room is thinking about getting a bachelor's degree in Psychology I'm going to help you right now John okay I'm just kidding that's not answering if you're done at the bachelor's degree level there are no for bachelor's degree in Psychology short of you want fries with that or do you want cream and sugar if you're going to be honest with yourself and you say I'm willing to go the distance and willing to get a master's degree a PhD Indie song combination is the money in the psychology field yes I know several people in my family who makes way more money than a doctor of Google psychologist and he is doing great and someone else a number of years ago I dated she is a PhD in Psychology she's making six figures loves her life she is doing break everyone else congratulations. Your bathroom is getting it again got heater. what are you meet me based on what you study homes in journalism not exactly knocking it out of the park. Visual and Performing Arts known as the Stellar glove so for those of you who are thinking I'm going to be an actor fries with that Sugar one of you is going to make it if you're going to 1099 if you were going to have one of those jobs education who is going to poo poo the education field anyone who works at your high school be nicer to them they are not highly paid they work their butts off they were way more hours than you think they do if they do have their Summers off trust me I know a little something about that but I can't I want to work with the kids I want to be in case you're 12 t-shirt I want you to be thinking be careful when you look at these data point what would make more sense I'm going to go to Cal State fill in the blank and pay in-state tuition and fast-track myself to a job or go to Emma taking all this school even though I went to the crosstown rival you go to USD and spend $1,000 a year to get the same degree one of those losses smart when does the white Roshes pictures of houses oh these are the five highest paid in every single potential job in the United States a bachelor's degree levels are looking at all computer sign in for me Brown Carnegie Mellon Kennedy stand for Harvey Mudd all super hard to get into and the prices that go with the degree what's the data telling you the one what you majoring is likely to be more important than where you get your degree number to there are some majors and some careers and some schools warpaint Annabelle again unless you're cops dying it engineering it you know you're headed to a career that has a starting salary that's going to put you're borrowing a large sum of money to pay for your education so you can get the job you already know pays Thirty $40,000 a year are you home so what you really think this process a bit and be a bit more pragmatic and a bit more logical and realize that in a every school year with parents who say stuff like this Rob you're really excited about how things went here and don't want my daughter she's admitted in UC San Diego and she signed her letter also have a couple who was the opportunities at some Ivy and the good news is we actually got in off of one of the waitlist Cornell just admitted in your daughter and now I'm really not sure what to do and I said Give me the give me the he says we're going to pay full price at Kohl's is it okay if I paid off $38,000 one year in San Diego during 2004 he said I just don't know what to do he says but here's the thing I'm really holding out hope that Harvard will take her off the waitlist for the easily spend the $80 is that a species or anything. I actually want you to think about what a joke is that ain't the same thing me the correct answer if I have a piece of candy a little bit more data about degrees in the last year or so I've heard a lot of just blah blah blah college is garbage you don't need college activate those against the very bottom of the screen you do not have a high school diploma on average in the United States your lifetime earnings or 1.2 million dollars Sir Richard Branson is a high school dropout in he would see that number quite a bit of issues in America high school graduate Point some college but no degree 1.9 B complex bachelor's degree is he's a size of a jumper 2.8 million be at that master's degree take a few hundred thousand more and then the biggest jump you get to that doctor or professional degree you're making 44.7 million / 2 he's on average has not only one is going to fit into this exact story a couple days ago who is currently in LA stranger things have happened remember you will make you happy you will make you successful brand on the outside of the institution is not responsible you are with walk away with that I'm going to be okay okay from Rob's perspective what things really matter or don't number one I would argue that the popularity contest when we look at the house ranking specifically US News & World Report are there you can argue with me all day long you are wrong you don't even have to have an argument why would I say that for the most popular ranking system in the world direct crash fire have you taken the time to look at how their formula I have about 30% of the formula is garbage its opinions of people who literally don't matter you don't believe me do a little check for yourselves if you don't want to take my word for it but there's a fan of response you so let's say there are a few schools that are tied at the same value in US News and world report there were three sets of school just a year or two ago University of Michigan University and Wake Forest University were all tied up does that mean you're good Wilshire is 127 that's a really good considering there's like 1750 not-for-profit four-year schools in America yeah that's really good but wait a second look at those three who was against one another in meaning University of Michigan who is familiar with the name of the University of Michigan go big blue you know it's sort of flu can you see La with Babylon be school or public school large classes that our football program basketball program Division 1 Sports lots of stuff going on great community. they're swept 30,000 students undergraduate students at Michigan who's her thoughts University most people in the room her tough not to choose it midsize cool about 9,000 undergraduate student Encompass illegally unequivocally different place different people different class sizes different environment different Athletics complete show me different languages Wake Forest University who's her to Wake Forest Demon deacon Tim Duncan Carew Street Huntington Domino's 8500 undergraduate student Foothill Division 1 athletic Coats North Carolina again different environment different people different volumes different class sizes but they're all arranged the same justify think about your child is your child want to sit in a room like this for their first flat you know 300 people 400 people 500 people case you think I'm joking I went to UCLA win first class is 525 people that was not my smallest class not even close stop watching flap 752 750 students with a German brand bowling ice cream with a baseball from where I was sitting professional is your student the one who wants to raise their hand in class doctor selling so can you help me better understand this concept because I really am not understanding it imagine your child and you CLA history one a sitting next to me with 525 on the Bruins raising their hand and asking that question for you no one in their right mind ask that question maybe your child is like I love that I can find a little dreidel do my business read my book when I feel like it when I feel like it take my midterm take my final write my paper don't want to be a number why on Earth would you apply life is good you miss the point it's good for food let someone else find the right place that's far more important than the name rain okay now let's go back to these rankings I go to the second bullet point ostensibly no Beatles. Trust me I've talked to enough people who work in division offices and they said but they can't ignore me as a matter fact they have to pay close attention to them cats chasing tail okay got to do this because it's stupid but someone else is paying attention and I know it's going to affect my admission number I guess I have to pay attention I give an example few years ago US News & World Report choose one of the values that they took into account and it focused on he'll Grant eligibles do what happened in the year that that datapoint you were eligible student your odds of getting into the most exclusive schools in the country probably do if you were just outside of  eligible range amazing not bothered at all because I am not good enough for anything else but because we have to pay attention to this blip so we have to shift our behaviors to keep up with the train cuz we're still 125 right think about what shouldn't you were looking at the day says you should be looking at school data when you're looking at things like school what percentage of the students show up for you and show up for you what's the percentage 70 what's the graduation rate of DC and most of you were thinking what is the 4-year graduation rate most people who publish a four-year graduation rate Public School very rarely why does most students don't get done for you to public school on average that number is hovering around 15% way it already cost how much per year to send my kid to college and if I send a note cool am I not accounted for things to think about private schools on the other hand are much better at getting done in four years and if their numbers are good they will gladly show them but this is standard 6-year graduation date so take a look and see how successful are the school you are most interested in graduating their students within six years and it's not a fairly big number cuz they're not doing a great job of holding up their end of the bargain but that also said something about the population of ffp are these what organ environment is this pool I talked to this all the time pay attention difference between commute in a residential school what percentage of the students live there if it's more than 50% it's residential more than 50% its commuter why does that matter what kind of experience are you going to have Auntie or most people their whole life or death when you're a commuter lie or not I can tell you a little something about this you're thinking about okay can I leave my car where it's parked for any longer before it gets towed or do I have to book it from wherever I am and run 20 minutes across campus to get there before it gets hooked up you're not thinking about asking a burning question professor cuz there's four other people in front of you in line you're Mickey an opportunity to further communicate you're missing an opportunity to network you're missing a better opportunity to get to know the community valuable information to learn in the class if you were to ask me what was the most important thing you walked away from you CLA it's not anything that took place in a classroom sure I have a couple of really a moment that I can tell you about the really interesting I won't bore you but those were the highlights of my time ended up figuring out how to be a grown up with more money how many volts does social one is more important you sure can go through as you guys made yourself what was the most important thing some of you was I got this piece of paper for many others was I met my wife I met my husband I met my best friend I developed a network of people that became the first job why do okay for those of you in the room we're like okay can we get to the part where you tell me how to get into these hard schools that you're trying to poo poo right now bacon what are the values used in a selective or highly selective environment on the board curriculum grade your GPA probably moving down especially here in the state of California extracurricular activities of interest and possibly an interview this is indeed your mom's opinion running from school to school so brintons if you said what which of these values does you CLA look at partially number two number four and number five what about school like Cal Poly San Luis Obispo which is not quite highly selective but definitely selective what do they look at number one impartially number two that's it what about usb number 1 number 2 number 3 number 4 number 5 number 6 number seven with you but it certainly / 6 the interdependent but if you are mastering each of the things on this list you know your odds are improving at the school that you wish to attack what to do beyond your control I mean sure you know number for in this day and age that you could argue with me again music for the real thing in the world I guess cool if you see here is just kind of who you are and your circumstances and can they affect an admission decision depending on where you normally someone says you know that doesn't affect legally camp most public schools in the United States have no such law normally this is where someone will say wait on White Run Asian they're screwing me are they probably not going to convince you that that's not true but understand that the idea behind using things like ethnicity and race is to create a broader environment of people who attend the school now if you happen to be an issue American you're applying the state of California I got bad news for you you dominate the California landscape even though you make up this much of the population that's not true and actually would be meaning of American speed first gen first generation I am a first-generation college student what does that mean my parents my grandparents did not attend college in this country or any country Call of Duty love first game why fresh blood right we got new people coming into the system this is excited we get to share the American dream would someone new who prior to this generation has been it's always going to be you're so she can arm extended even in California that can come into play normally people say oh well you're rich so you're screwed nope your middle-class report everyone just what's the best instrument wealthy people have an advantage why cuz you have money in colleges are businesses if they see you have a lot of it they will gladly help you when you come to the school and maybe give you your name on the building your poor you have an advantage because you can't afford it so we're going to help you figure it out the group in the middle that bear was the Bronco times than honestly forces you make sacrifices to think outside the box I work for the family this past year very bright young man what we gon do ice cube he said no problem I want to go to one of those big round rock school but I'm going to go to the one in the midwest a because I stand a really good chance of getting in and because they all have hockey teams I said I think this is a great idea if you're willing to go and explore those cool I think you're going to get in the most of them and you might even get a little money got an old hen School ended up in Michigan State who is currently paying to attend school he's literally getting paid to go to college and he's a freshman doing research with rashes Flash wave way better than having any Lucy School in terms of experience and cost baby Sac State and religion geographic location your stew North Dakota no one else from North Dakota applied to this Collective School this year had a good shot because colleges are always looking to build as well rounded and environment as they possibly can do we have all 50 states how many countries do we have in the United States and our incoming class has anytime you look at a brochure from a college they're going to show you that stuff why because it's even in its original Latin text College essentially mean come it's raining people from all walks of life Under One Roof to solve The World's problems but I think she's actually still tries to do Legacy status for those who are unfamiliar of Legacy means you have an immediate or near immediate family member who has attended and preferably graduated from that same school I can only hope your pot used to be a bit more stuff are you related to a school employee will surely that's going to be an advantage because you know you want to try it out you know that my secretarial staff works really hard to take care of all the needs I have here and you know Sally son really wants to go to this school and we also have a tuition benefit where that student is admitted they don't have to pay tuition it's kind of bb The Institute me this is one that people normally take a step back you're what does that mean it sounds important I told you earlier that the college is a business big mistake that room their bottom line is still the most important thing in public or private we talked about things like institutional need an example of weight loss play I run the office of admission at school ex doesn't matter what the school is cool ax and I have 3,000 seats that need to be filled and I get 2800 yes. and I say wow we came up to 200 ship our best efforts yielded us almost all the way to the finish line but those 200 paying customers or the difference between black line on financially that red wine on our financials for the year so how am I going to fill those two hundred how deep is probably going to be the smartest one gets in nope well it depends on the institutional knee is it were broke life sure you're going to look at the financial statements maybe a glass of 55% women and 44 and a half percent women will we need to go away okay right now what about particular major for Department deaths under enroll we only have five of the 15 spot we had slotted for a Pieology do we have any wait-listed kids for the anthropology degree we need to build a glasses so we don't have to turn Rebecca what is the institutionally the problem is no one will ever tell you what that needed there's no advertising in the LA times and then you can come and check the boxes and see if it's going to work you're going to getting a knocking from waitress you'll never know what it is don't understand all of these values and factors are beyond your control but they do in fact way somewhat heavily on a yes or no decision and then back to the violin the same day based on the back flashlight highly selective schools tend to read applications holistically which basically means everything they ask for they're going to read it one time and give a single unlike a lot of the were they will Ward scores based on your GPA or curriculum or a combination of both and a test for and then they do some math and they put you into a ID they want to go up by Major Lazer understand that there are those instances where circumstances were a couple of readers take a look at your application and either a they both said you're on the fence which is your little one third or maybe even a fourth reader or real one said you were awesome rear to said you kind of  and I can't be possible they'll bring an expert or two to revalue if it's still too close to call do go to a committee for literally a bunch of people sitting around a table one person who is responsible for your neck of the woods will go for the reason why Rockport should be admitted other people will stay longer some pools in this part of his game what about that part we already have too many people here who says yes who says no goes into a pie literally that's how it works there's probably a lot of questions I'm hoping there are a lot of questions maybe some pain first things first for those of you who want to ask a question in the public domain in a 22nd and ask you to raise your hand and one of the counselors going to come around with the microphone so you can close that question from receipt That's all you're doing you really don't even care what he is really like second one is where the money is made what is the worst thing about going here what is it during the 90-minute walking tour in 20 min 50 Cent video they wouldn't tell me that you pay for and don't like and if there's something on the bus that's where you'll find the inside don't hang out with her knee deep really pretty building do I think there's value in visiting schools 100% And strongly encourages do so also strongly encourage you to have a minimum visit a couple of different types do I talk to a family and I'm not too long ago the family tonight we went and visited three schools I said would you see u c Berkeley UCLA UC Davis I said well I was great you saw three different parts City California good for you where's the small or medium sized School but we're not sure we're interested in Old you're not sure right why don't you go and see one and then let me know how that goes you'll see a totally different Universe you might not like it but wouldn't you rather say I saw it been there went to the three ring circus it I don't need to see it again then go home I don't know maybe kind of for those who cannot get to the school please take your virtual tours whether it's a third-party or run by the school probably going to give you some good information going by the school it's going to be the same warmed-over we're the greatest there the human back there so how do you actually go about finding these magical schools that are the right one for your kids how do you find the mass School the first thing is there is no magic school let's let's be clear I don't want to I don't want to paint a picture that there's debt Cinderella's glass slipper waiting for everyone in the room and here's why one of those schools there's ten more just like it might be in a different part of the country but they're out there what is it you're looking for General baseball mean religious school secular School in what part of the country I'm interested in living for the next 4 years you want to be in a minute Albany area you want to be in San Francisco San Jose San Diego La Austin Chicago New York Philly Detroit Detroit Boston Miami. This week you know maybe you want to be in the middle of nowhere when someone says I really want to stay in California for college. tell me as much as you think it. Do you want to be in Downtown LA at St getting a world-class education soaking up all the coach of the LA has to offer see I didn't crap on it do you want to be in the middle of nowhere in California at Cal Poly humble yes was he did not know they changed their names are now out of humble even though they don't have an engineering program yet where is that he's in the middle of nowhere it's 40 minutes south of the Oregon quarter on a highway one literally you can't get any do you not think this process group what do I want as a consumer and if you're not sure back to this gentleman's question show me a picture of local schools you know I get students and parents were like oh we got to fly across the country and take a look at some schools in Boston why once you start your backyard and figure out what you like here and then just opposed how you start searching the prospect be a bit more spend a weekend next question please where do you where do you find it trying to think of who I recommend my feelings campusreel. What day was what are some of the third-party sites in terms of looking for a campus tour that's not to buy that cool itself over to the timer was thinking I wanted to No One downtown Google good question question is how do you find schools that offer a lot of Merit Aid finally ran flock ran across the question that my business partner should be answering me one thing I generally don't do is financial aid at the one thing he does really well it's varies quite a bit and it has a lot to do with how bad does that fool want your it's not ever single student in this school they roll out the red carpet or is it why do they want that particular student something in that jumped out let them get to somewhere else sometimes it's 4. take me to 19 student to get admitted up to IDs and they get very little money but they got a little bit more or one of the IVs in the other no go back and say hey to be 5,000 more than I really like to go to your school basketball final so it's not possible for me to give you that stupid answer if you email me I will connect you to my business partner and he can follow up value and duddy not do you want to know how that connects so he's not going buddy OK Google question is you know I have a child who is not interested in the super high paying Cynthia you but I also want to encourage him to do the things he's passionate about which I agreed to curb your going to do something well probably going to pay you for to your point into the random question which is how do you figure out how to connect the dot if I have this degree in linguistics where's the job that I can go and pay for gas how did the Greek this is what I first things first this is going to be at. What degree of Psych what jobs are available with a the second thing is who became a stay-at-home mom what is Georgetown University kid I'm advocating for my three kids 2 South Pasadena Unified School District as saved a ton of money by knowing what the law says I mean I don't care that I mean I do care and love having come and he's a great kid.
