Dear Parents and Students,
Welcome to senior year! We are excited to work with seniors during this very important time, and we look forward to assisting them with their transition beyond high school.
We want to take this opportunity to share some information with you that was presented to your child during our senior class visits last week. Enclosed is a graduation check to determine progress towards graduation. We have included a copy of your student’s transcript for your review and to assist with college applications. Teachers and counselors will use Naviance to submit college recommendations, transcripts, and other documents electronically to all colleges. If the college does not accept electronic submission, we will mail all documents. Your student must use Naviance and update all the data for their college applications. We encourage you to review your child’s college list with him/her and use Naviance to track the application process. We will be hosting college application workshops on late start mornings:
Independent College Workshop: Wednesday, September 5; 8-9 AM; location by assigned counselor
UC Workshop: Tuesday, September 18; 8-9 AM; Auditorium
CSU Workshop: Wednesday, September 19; 8-9 AM; Library
Community College Workshop: Tuesday, October 23; 8-9 AM; Little Theater
Counselors are also hosting a Senior/Parent College Awareness Evening on Wednesday, September 12 at 7pm in the Auditorium. Counselors and college representatives will review the college application process and will provide admission updates and application tips.
Students need to use the enclosed transcript to ensure accuracy and avoid misrepresentation of grades when filling out college applications. November 30 th is the application deadline for all UC/CSU campuses while independent colleges/universities have varying deadlines. College applications are online, and their websites provide instruction on how to fill out the applications. Counselors are available to help seniors with college applications, answer questions, review college essays, and write letters of recommendations. Letters of recommendation are required for many independent colleges and some out-of-state colleges. We will interview each senior prior to writing our letter of recommendation and confirm that all the necessary documents are in order before they submit their college applications. Seniors will need to schedule an appointment with their counselor no later than November 2.
Many college representatives visit SPHS in the fall semester to talk about their campus and to meet our students. The dates and times of these visits are posted on Naviance; announcements are also made in the Daily Bulletin, by Naviance emails, and the Counseling Facebook page. Seniors should check their school email inbox frequently for important information regarding college events. It is highly recommended that seniors attend meetings of colleges that interest them and network with the representative. In addition, we will inform students/parents of college informational meetings/college fairs around our local area through Naviance emails and on the counseling Facebook page.
Financial aid for a college education is a primary concern for many parents. We will host our annual Financial Aid workshop on October 17, 2018. A financial aid expert from Occidental College will present information on different types of financial aid (FAFSA, Cal Grant, CSS Profile, loans, and scholarships) and will explain the step-by-step process for filling out the FAFSA. The FAFSA filing period opens on October 1, 2018. You and your senior were asked to sign the Senior Graduation Policy relating to grades and attendance. Please make sure that your child is attending all classes regularly and is passing all required classes. Please do not block the school from your email or your telephone. Parents can view their student’s attendance and grades on the Aeries Browser Interface (ABI). Earning 220 credits and completing required community service hours are the graduation requirements. Make sure Graduation Day, June 5, 2019, is circled on your calendar. Remember, it is important to plan early, stay on track, and meet deadlines.
We are very excited about the road ahead of us, and we are looking forward to an exciting and successful
school year for all of our students.
