Of the many scholarships and awards given each year to South Pasadena High School seniors, perhaps the most meaningful and prestigious are the Weldon Fairplay Awards. With the criteria of scholarship, integrity, responsibility, good sportsmanship, and being fair to all people, it is no wonder that it is so highly regarded. Each year, three girls and three boys are selected.
The Weldon Awards were established in 1929 by William R.H. Weldon, a long-time resident of South Pasadena. He was a member of the school board for many years and the Board President in 1929. Mr. Weldon’s interest in fair play and leadership led him to create this award, now in its 86th year. The names of all the recipients since 1929 are on the same trophy. In addition, each recipient receives a gold pin and a certificate.
Each year, every student at SPHS is invited to nominate a senior boy and/or girl for the Award, and a committee of 13 staff members and 12 students selects the recipients from among the nominations.
Here is the list Mr. Weldon established for requirements:
- Is he independent in examinations?
- Is he willing to assume responsibility?
- Is he courteous on all occasions for example, club meetings, assembly, library, classrooms, campus, etc?
- If in a position of responsibility does he appoint boys and girls from all groups or does he give all opportunities for service to those in his own clique?
- If in a position of responsibility does he assume and carry out his responsibilities?
- Is he willing to give service to school with an unselfish heart and without a desire for personal gain?
- Is he democratic in his fellowship and treatment of his fellow students?
- Does he reflect exceptional sportsmanship and high morals in all of his actions and words?
If you would like to nominate a senior, please go to voting4schools.com/southpasadenaand select nominees by Thursday morning.
