<p style="margin: 0px"><span style="line-height: 25.6000003814697px">Of the many scholarships and awards given each year to </span>South Pasadena High School<span style="line-height: 25.6000003814697px"> seniors, perhaps the most meaningful and prestigious are the Weldon Fairplay Awards.&nbsp; With the criteria of scholarship, integrity, responsibility, good sportsmanship, and being fair to all people, it is no wonder that it is so highly regarded. Each year, three girls and three boys are selected.&nbsp;</span></p>
<p style="margin: 0px; line-height: 25.6000003814697px"><span style="font-family: georgia, serif; line-height: 25.6000003814697px">The Weldon Awards were established in 1929 by William R.H. Weldon, a long-time resident of </span>South Pasadena<span style="font-family: georgia, serif; line-height: 25.6000003814697px">.</span><span style="font-family: georgia, serif; line-height: 25.6000003814697px">&nbsp; </span><span style="font-family: georgia, serif; line-height: 25.6000003814697px">He was a member of the school board for many years and the Board President in 1929.</span><span style="font-family: georgia, serif; line-height: 25.6000003814697px">&nbsp;</span><span style="font-family: georgia, serif; line-height: normal">Mr. Weldon’s interest in fair play and leadership led him to create this award, now in its 86th year.</span><span style="font-family: georgia, serif; line-height: normal">&nbsp; </span><span style="font-family: georgia, serif; line-height: normal">The names of all the recipients since 1929 are on the same trophy.</span><span style="font-family: georgia, serif; line-height: normal">&nbsp; </span><span style="font-family: georgia, serif; line-height: normal">In addition, each recipient receives a gold pin and a certificate.</span></p>
<p style="margin: 0px; line-height: 25.6000003814697px"><span style="font-family: georgia, serif; line-height: normal">Each year, every student at SPHS is invited to nominate a senior boy and/or girl for the Award, and a committee of 13 staff members and 12 students selects the recipients from among the nominations.</span></p>
