Final Day Activities in Google Classroom

Final Day Activities

YOU ALL are required to be present for the full two hours.
YOU ALL will have some reflection questions to answer for participation points. Pay attention to the word count requirements.

YOU ALL will have an optional timed write. This will include a non-BLCS writing option. However, if you choose to write about BLCS, you can use your book. Take this information into consideration when deciding how much time you spend preparing and when you return your books to the textbook room.

ADDITIONALLY, THOSE WHO DIDN'T RCD ON THURSDAY, will have one REQUIRED timed write on BLCS in addition to the optional timed write. If you think you'll want to do both, you may want to do the RCD/Timed Write before class. You could do the assignment on a Google doc ahead of time and come to class to hear directions about how and when to submit it.

Here is the prompt:
Should schools censor inappropriate literature? What qualifies as inappropriate? Can you think of things that you’ve read at the high school that had glimpses of inappropriateness, but whose positives far outweighed the questionable? Your examples should come from two different texts, Balzac and the Little Chinese Seamstress and one of your choosing. Your answer must be 300+ words long and include three specific details.

This prompt is one of the three choices for the optional timed write. If you also do the optional timed write, be sure to choose one of the Sleeping Beauty prompts later.

A78 (Grendel Writing, 20 points)

Grendel grows, but does he mature? It's a good idea to focus on where he ends up. So you may want to pull your two quotes from the last two chapters. You can build in a discussion of any of the philosophies, but it's not required. If interested, search the philosophies using the Britannica link in the research tab of our library's webpage. Your writing should be 3/4 a page long. It is worth 20 points and will be stamped today.

SRP Final Draft in Google Classroom

SRP Final Draft

BE SURE TO READ THE BELOW INFORMATION AND THE ATTACHMENT.

It makes sense to not get started on the Final Draft until after Wednesday's class when you have had a chance to see peer feedback on your Rough Draft. Nevertheless, here are the directions.

Clean up your paper based on peer feedback.

If you feel like you'd like more feedback, seek additional help from another person whose writing you trust.

It is okay to use the word “I” ONLY in the conclusion of this paper.

ADD an introduction. It may be less than a paragraph long. Provide a few sentences about the Senior Research Project. “Seniors at South Pasadena High School are asked to research a career of interest…” “This paper takes a look at information that is available about career X…” Go on to add a few sentences about the conceptions people generally have about the career. You can then simply plop them on top of the first body paragraph if it's not enough to warrant a full paragraph.

ADD a conclusion. The conclusion may be multiple paragraphs long. It should start with your thesis. Is this career for you or not? Give two specific reasons that are rooted in your research. You should reference the cds (2+) that helped you decide and cite them again. Then, whether you plan to pursue the career or not, what are the next steps? How will you continue your career investigation/preparation into next year? Together, the intro and conclusion should add an additional 400 words to your paper.

ADD a creative title.

The turnitin post will be available the afternoon of 4/22.

Return to this post and click "done" once you have submitted to turnin.com.

Make sure you have followed all the directions for the original SRP Rough Draft of Body in Classroom AND remove all labeling so that it presents as 1000+ words written in regular body paragraphs. Keep your in-text citations within your quotes, your alpha works cited entries at the end, and add the word count with a stand alone sentence that reads: "The word count of this body is_____." SRP Rough Draft of Body in Google Classroom

SRP Rough Draft of Body

1. Make sure you don't start the Rough Draft of the Body until you've fully completed Narrowed SRP Note-taking or an alternative to which Mrs. Greenhouse has agreed.

2. Make a copy of Narrowed SRP Note-taking and title it SRP Rough Draft of the Body.

3. Check that you have in-text citations for all 10 of your chosen Say's/CD's and that they match perfectly to the beginning of each works cited entry.

4. Move all your works cited entries to the end of the document and alphabetize them.

5. Move the 10 SMM's under each topic listed at the top.

6. Treat each topic like a body paragraph. Add a topic sentence to each.

7. Read through your paper.

8. Consider the arrangement. You can now decide to organize the body differently if you like. You might decide to collapse two paragraphs if you have one that’s short on SMM's. You might decide to arrange SMM's according to their positive or negative tone about the career. Or, you might decide to arrange them by source (not recommend). It is also very acceptable to leave the paragraphs organized by topic.

9. This rough draft should be about 1000 words (this does NOT include the works cited page). If it's not yet 1000, you may include additional SMM's from Note-taking Draft 3 and/or your book, or one of your interviews.
10. Submit to the rough draft to turnitin.com before class on Tuesday, 4/12.

Have you completed this assignment?

Narrowed SRP Note-taking in Google Classroom

Narrowed SRP Note-taking

Follow these directions in the precise order. AND DON'T DELETE until I use the word "delete!"
1. Go to SRP NT Draft 3. Make a copy. Title the copy “Narrowed SRP Note-taking.”
2. Choose 5 SMM’s. What’s your most important finding for topics 1-5? Enlarge the font of those SMM’s.
3. Choose 1 SMM from your book (pages A60-A63). What’s the most important finding?
4. Make sure you’ve already selected from 5+ sources (book must be one).
5. Choose more important findings (SMM’s) for a total of 10. Topics and sources of your choice. Here, you can also consider using Q and A's from your interviews.
6. Check originality highlights in turnitin's SRP Note-taking Draft 3 submission. Make sure Say's are in quotes on both ends. Make sure quotes within quotes are done correctly. Make sure any mean or matter material that is more than four consecutive words, or contains any author style, is in quotes! If you Say's are fact driven, and your mean is repetitive, maybe delete the mean.
7. Delete unwanted SMM’s from this copy.
8. Use free software (easybib or citation machine) to create works cited entries for each of your sources and finetune your in-text citations to match your wc entries. Include URL's. Remember that if there’s no author, title or organization are acceptable defaults, BUT the in-text citations must match the beginning of their respective wc entries. So, let the software take the lead. Your works cited entries can replace the links in this doc. Don't worry about putting them in an alphabetized list yet.
9. Submit to turnitin.com during class.

CATCHING UP OVER BREAK in Google Classroom

CATCHING UP OVER BREAK

Remember that there is NO NEW HOMEWORK over break.

However, if you are behind on the reading, notebook, or SRP Note-taking, you may want to catch up over break.

Remember that before break we:

1. Read through chapter 3 of Grendel.
2. Completed the notebook through page A65.
3. Submitted draft 3 of the SRP Note-taking (9 sources and 22 SMM) to turnitin.com. This assignment is still worth 45/60 if done well and submitted to turnitin.com before class on 4/4/22.

Due:

SRP Note-taking Draft 3 in Google Classroom

SRP Note-taking Draft 3

DIRECTIONS: Update draft 2 to include a total of 9 electronic sources and 22 SMM's. Make sure that you've listed the 5 topics at the top of your doc, noted with brackets the topic number for each Say/CD, and included at least 1 Say/CD for each topic. It's more ideal to include 2+ Say/CD's per topic. FURTHERMORE, you must now also include in-text citations for each of the 22 Say/quotes. See the Purdue OWL link for details on proper MLA in-text citations. The link can be found under the FOR REFERENCE heading.

Also, I talked with Ms. Wilkerson about the titles vs. corporation-as-an-author dilemma. She said that as we make the transition from MLA 8 to 9, either option works. So remember that a single author is always the first choice. Yet, without an author, use either the corporation as the author OR the title freely. See the attachment for an example of two different citations that will work for a single quote.

Don't forget that student samples and a narrative about what each does well can be found in the SRP Note-taking Draft 2 post.

This document is now due to turnitin.com before class on Thursday.

SRP Note-taking Draft 2

Update draft 1 to include a total of 5 sources and 15 SMM's. This will not need to be submitted to turnitin.com again until it's complete (9 sources and 22 SMM's) on 3/21. However, I could ask you to show me during class that you have kept pace.

Sample 1 follows the exact formatting directions that I gave for draft 1.

Sample 2 follows a traditional outline format. This will be accepted too. Sample two has stronger matters than sample 1 because the matter directly addresses the "is the say attractive to prospective employees" question. However, this sample's matters could be even stronger by staying away from "I" and "me" language.

Sample 3's first matter does the best job of the three samples. However, it can be even stronger by avoiding "you" language and instead using "one," "anyone," or the "would-be" physical therapist.

Remember to include the list of the 5 topics I gave you at the top of draft 2. You may add a 6th topic of your choosing, but it's not required. Also, please put the number of the corresponding topic in brackets just after each quote.

Words Worth Knowing (Vocab. Slides) in Google Classroom

Words Worth Knowing (Vocab. Slides)

1. Identify the most interesting vocabulary word in your assigned pages. Clear the word with Mrs. Greenhouse.
2. Quote the sentence in which the word appears. Note page number also.
3. Write down both the part of speech and definition. The definition should match the use in the text.
4. Create an original sentence that uses the word and teaches the meaning of the word. The more memorable the better.
5. Number items 1-4.
6. Draw a sketch illustrating the action in your sentence.

1-3 should demonstrate shared thinking. 4 and 6 can be individual. Everyone records each step on their own paper.

Pick the best and turn it into a slide. Be sure your group number and all group member names appear on your slide/s.

*Anyone absent on 1/28 does not need to worry about this assignment.
