Biology is a course that focuses on building an understanding of basic biological processes and how the coordination of these processes work to support life. The mission of this course is to develop students into independent learners with a strong foundation in the fundamental principals of biology and a collegiate level critical thinking capacity. Students will be introduced to the process of scientific inquiry and will develop skills in posing and solving their own questions of living phenomena. This will enable them to be lifelong students of this constantly expanding field.
Biology is an immensely broad topic with more knowledge being added to the field daily. The four big ideas that will frame our understanding of biological concepts are:
1. The process of evolution drives the diversity and unity of life.
2. Biological systems utilize free energy and molecular building blocks to grow, to reproduce, and to maintain dynamic homeostasis.
3. Living systems store, retrieve, transmit, and respond to information essential to life processes.
4. Biological systems interact, and these systems and their interactions possess complex properties.
