SPUSD Committee Provides Input on Educational Technology

As the school year comes to a close, we would like to celebrate the SPUSD Ed Tech Committee that formed in 2024. Each year, the group meets regularly to discuss and synthesize information surrounding technology in schools and its impact on students.

This hard-working, dedicated committee is composed of teachers, staff, administrators, parents, and student volunteers. Throughout the year, they have taken a deep dive into artificial intelligence (AI) and generative AI. Among many tasks, they helped develop AI-specific questions for this year’s LCAP survey, which was sent to parents, students, and staff in April 2026. The results of the survey will be shared as part of the 2026-2027 LCAP presentation and will inform a revised digital citizenship curriculum that includes AI guidelines.

The committee is set to reconvene after the start of the 2026-2027 school year to explore parameters around technology use in schools. It is important to note that SPUSD’s one-to-one technology initiative begins in third grade. Also, as a part of the state-required learning continuity plan, which can be used during unforeseen school closures, online access for students is required to ensure digital textbooks are accessible. It will be necessary to strike a balance between safety precautions and screen time recommendations. As a reminder, social media sites are automatically blocked on school devices, and families may monitor their children’s technology use after school hours by activating the no-cost Qustodio app.

Thank you to all the committee members for the countless hours and thoughtful work completed on these important topics!
