Fire Technology Course at SPHS Introduces Students to Fire Protection and Related Fields

What started as a normal mid-week school day transitioned into a thrilling, hands-on training exercise with the South Pasadena Fire Department and local paramedics. Students enrolled in Principles of Emergency Services, a new Pasadena City College (PCC), dual enrollment course offered at SPHS, tried on fire personal protective equipment, handled fire tools, including hoses and axes, and learned how to take cover in a wildland fire shelter, among other activities.

The course provides an overview of fire protection and emergency services, including learning about career opportunities in fire protection. High school students earn high school credit and PCC college credit upon completion of the course. For this particular exercise, students were asked to create an incident action plan with safety considerations and curricular objectives. Instructors from Pasadena City College, Captain Frank Bramblia and Chief Joseph Guarrera, coordinated with the South Pasadena Fire Department and PCC Fire Technology team to create an event that was both educational and exciting for the students.

Thank you to PCC, the South Pasadena Fire Department, and all the volunteers who made the event possible.

Go, Tigers!
