Students in SPHS Sports Medicine classes have several opportunities to experience hands-on learning in and out of the classroom. This week, the students interacted with the Anatomage Table for a lesson on vital signs. The Anatomage table includes life-size, three-dimensional, digital replicas of humans (cadavers) that students may rotate, cross-section, and animate to learn how various body systems work.
With two levels of sports medicine, Introduction to Sport Medicine and Advanced Sports Medicine, which is now an honors class, students learn the foundation and practices of sports medicine, and then put them to use. Whether it is working with the Anatomage Table, hosting Athlete Recovery Weeks during the year, or assisting the SPUSD Athletic Trainer, the students are given multiple opportunities to practice their skills like taping and wrapping athletes, providing triage and wound care, and assisting with therapy and rehabilitation.
This spring, SPHS students will participate in competitions, including ones that use the Anatomage table, and other regional skills challenges. Thank you to the Sports Medicine teacher, Andre Zumaeta, for leading and inspiring the students.
Go, Tigers!
