Cell Communication Unit

Hi All!

I hope you are staying healthy! I am posting your second self-study unit-cell signaling. I have linked to a Prezi with my voiceover. I have also linked to Bozeman for content reference. After self-studying, I recommend following up with some practice in your CollegeBoard account.

As of now, the Collegeboard seems to be planning to administer the tests online, at home, for 45 minutes. See here for updates: https://apcentral.collegeboard.org/about-ap/news-changes/coronavirus-update

This will be the final week that I post material in this manner. After Spring Break, expect that we will fully transition to GoogleClassroom. When we switch to GoogleClassroom we will be on distance learning mode-it will not be optional material. Some of the material I have posted over the past two weeks will repeat and there will be assignments that count towards your grade at that time.

If you have any questions, feel free to email me. I will be checking emails throughout the week.

In Good Health,

Ms. Pierson

AP Exam Update

Hi All,

Collegeboard has announced that in-person AP testing will not take place this year. Testing will be available at home on two different dates. Details to come. See: https://apcentral.collegeboard.org/about-ap/news-changes/coronavirus-update

They removed some topics for this year so once you finish immune system, there is only one more topic-endocrine system/cell signaling. I will post the resources for that unit next week on this site. However, after next week I will be transitioning us to a Google Classroom format. If our school closure extends past April 6th, distance learning will be more easily accomplished through that platform. Details to follow.

After we finish the endocrine system, we will use our time moving forward to review and dive deeper on topics I had to shorten to keep us on pace with finishing all course content.

I hope you all are staying healthy. I know there are a lot of unknowns and changes day to day. Feel free to reach out if you need some support.

Best,
Ms. Pierson

AP Biology Self-Study: Immune System

Hi All!

I hope you are staying healthy! I am posting your first self-study unit-the immune system. I have linked to a Prezi with my voiceover. I have also linked to two crash course videos for more content reference. Following the basic content introduction, there are supplemental videos regarding different categories of pathogens and some specifics on viruses. Hopefully you will find this information extra interesting with the immediate relevance to what is going on around us.

After self-studying I recommend following up with some practice in your CollegeBoard account. I have included free response problems on one and will score them at the end of the week so you can see your responses. The two assignments for this week:

  • Immune System Practice
  • Collegeboard Exam Prep: Evolution Review 1

As of now, the Collegeboard seems to be planning to work around closures and still provide AP testing. See here for updates: https://apcentral.collegeboard.org/about-ap/news-changes/coronavirus-update

If you have any questions, feel free to email me. I will be checking emails throughout the week.

In Good Health,

Ms. Pierson

Big Idea 3 Summative Quiz 3 Updates

Hi All,

If you were having trouble accessing the second Collegeboard practice I posted, it has been fixed now. Try again!

Tonight focus on Chi2, Sex-linked Inheritance and Linked Genes more than anything.

Quiz will be 10 MC, 1 LFR.

Best of luck studying!

Ms. Pierson

Genetics Lesson

Hi All,

I am not feeling well and will most likely be out tomorrow. If that is the case, I am calling upon you to (re)teach yourself Mendelian Inheritance.

Friday's Sub Lesson

1) Watch Bozeman Science for the Basics of Monohybrid and Dihybrid Crosses:

2) Complete the monohybrid and dihybrid cross problems in the packet. The sub will have printed copies.
https://docs.google.com/document/d/1K6pajp2nT87iPWjXshEA_yLzxM9qJ5PZopLwW7Sdcro/edit?usp=sharing

3) At least attempt the final Chi2/Mendelian inheritance problems. HINT: Your expected values come from a dihybrid cross with a null hypothesis that the trait is Mendelian. Your observed values are given to you. I will also go over this when I see you next.

4) If there is extra time, see if you can construct pedigrees from the problems left at the lab tables. Or there is a Collegeboard practice quiz if you want to get a jumpstart on meiosis/Mendel applications.

Please be productive so we can move on to more advanced genetics next week.

Best,
Ms. Pierson

Lab Report Guidelines

A NOTE ABOUT DATA: You are not graded on your data. Data is data! Part of the scientific process is yielding no results, unexpected results, exciting results. I will be assessing your ANALYSIS of the data and experiment. Maybe your experiment did not exactly work. GREAT! You will spend more of your discussion discussing method than results. Maybe your results show an interesting trend (expected or unexpected). GREAT! You will spend more of your discussion discussing the data. This is all part of the process of science. There is no need to get anxious over the data-it is an objective observation-not a right and wrong.

Remember lab reports are to be completed in pairs. If you are writing in a trio make sure to come check in with me to make sure your lab report is robust enough to warrant a trio.

There is more in the guidelines than you may need to do for this report. You will not be performing a Chi2 test or any advanced statistics for this formal lab unless you are interested in doing so. See me if you have questions about this.

Final Review Sessions

Photosynthesis Summative Quiz

Welcome back!

Your quiz tomorrow will consist of 6 multiple choice questions and 2 short free response. It is worth12 points.

Focus on the light reactions and the flow of electrons through the thylakoid membrane.

Best,
Ms. Pierson
