U.S. History (Period 1)

Course Description

This class is designed to give students an overview of modern United States history. While we will review early years of the U.S., the main focus will be on the 20th and 21st centuries. The course organizes the study of history around three broad, interrelated goals:

  • Knowledge and cultural understanding, emphasized by integrating the study of history, geography, ethics, controversial issues, economics, the humanities and political science.
  • Democratic understanding and civic values, encouraged by a focus on constitutional heritage, national identity, and global relations.
  • Skills attainment and social participation, developed by offering ways for students to work independently, as well as with others. Opportunities will be provided for students to use critical thinking skills, in addition to basic study skills.
