Due:

Assignment

You may choose to do this last essay as a timed write or a process paper. Instead of homework due at the beginning of class, I will give you 50 minutes to do the rough draft during class on Friday. If you turn it in Friday, I will give you 10 additional points and you'll be done with the essay. If you choose not to turn it in Friday, you may take it home over the weekend to complete a first draft by Wednesday. Then, you'll edit it in class on Wednesday and submit the second/final draft by 5/30 (a day when you see all your teaches). If you choose to do a process paper, but don't want homework over the holiday weekend, start the first draft before class on Friday. I will grade the timed writes in the same way I grade the process papers, hence the additional points for an essay submitted at the end of the period on Friday.

See the attached prompts.

SRP draft is due. It should be complete, but it CAN be in black and white and NOT bound at this point. DO NOT submit to turnitin.com. Instead, you must bring a hard copy to class. Don't wait until Tuesday morning to print. Attached you will find a pdf of the exact copy of the handbook distributed in October, the most updated rubric as a separate document, and an updated final checklist that you can use to help you with all the details and organization of your paper. You do NOT need to turn the final checklist in at this point. You will complete it for me when you do the final draft of the paper. In class on Tuesday, your peers will use the updated rubric to edit your draft. For those doing part IV, you must include a works cited page. Do not rely on easybib.com for this. Instead I recommend you use the link below to a reputable source.

Assignment

SRP: How many responses have you received to your survey? Now is the time to make a second attempt.

I'd call and say: "Hi my name is___. I am a student at South Pasadena High School. As part of a school project I sent you an electronic survey. I'm really interested in your feedback and am wondering the best way to get you to complete my short survey. Can I bring a physical copy to you or do you prefer I send it electronically again? I really appreciate your time. Thanks so much."

Next class, you will need to show all your correspondence. You will get a grade based on the number of times (2) you have reached out to the number of people (14).

Other class work/Outliers: Think about whether or not you agree with Gladwell's argument that the American summer vacation should be eliminated. Read the two articles linked below. You may do the optional spiral work as a way to make up old spiral points. We discussed the setup in class. However, keep in mind that spiral makeup points can only elevate your spiral grade to a 70% at best.

Assignment

Prepare for Wednesday's seminars. Each student will be randomly pulled into one of three seminars. You may prepare one page (front and back) of handwritten notes for the seminar. This is one page total, not one for each question. You may also use your copy of Outliers. To earn a top score, you should:

1. Know the pertinent points for chapter nine.
2. Make sure you thoroughly answer the biggest question in each prompt.
3. Find examples of the question's givens in chapter nine.
4. Speak two of more times.
5. Quote the text (with page numbers) two or more times.
6. Listen and respond to others' ideas.
7. Add insight to the conversation.

The prompts below are from the last few pages of Outliers.

1. Malcolm Gladwell argues that there's no such thing as a s self-made man and that super achievers are successful because of their circumstances, their families, and their appetite for hard work. How is this view different from the way you have thought about and understood success in the past?

4. Do you believe there is such a thing as innate talent? What, according to Gladwell, is the difference among talent, preparation, and opportunity? What link does practice have to success?

8. Gladwell writes about meritocracies influenced by advantages some people have over others by virtue of opportunities, education, and coaching. As the income gap in the United States continues to widen, do you think that social mobility, which is an essential part of achieving success, will continue to suffer?
