English 9 (Period 7) Assignments

Do a second (final) draft of your personal narrative. Submit it to turnitin.com before our last class. Bring hard copies of drafts one and two with you. Be sure that you have a great title, use the title of the IR book in your first paragraph, have 3+ examples of non-sight imagery, and an explicit theme stated. Lastly, bring your spiral! You can use your spiral on the Romeo and Juliet timed writing and I will want to grade it while you work on the writing assignment.

Bring a hard copy of the completely drafted IR project. For details about the assignment, look back at the directions for the 5/25 homework posting. Don't forget to have your spirals with you this day and on the day of your final.

Start your IR project during class on Wednesday, 5/23 and add to it for homework. A first draft will not be due until 5/30. This way I can address any questions you have when I return on Thursday and Friday. Nevertheless, you want to take advantage of the opportunity to start drafting during class on Wednesday.

 

The project is a personal narrative. In about 500 words, you should tell about some experience you've had. You have three purposes with this narrative. 1. Start with a paragraph that offers some bridge between your IR book and your story. Perhaps you spend this paragraph explaining how different your story is from the IR book. It is not necessary that there be a connection. 2. Be vivid in your story telling. Incorporate some non-sight imagery. And 3. Explicitly state a theme somewhere in your narrative.

 

Enjoy writing these. I really look forward to reading them! 

Finish the play and the two spiral pages for Act V. Prepare for a quiz on Acts IV and V. Be sure to know all 21 words and terms that could appear on the quiz. Also, have your spirals handy for grading each day for the rest of the semester. Lastly, bring your quarter 4 IR books if possible. The project will be revealed this day.

Read 5.3. Finish the first Act V spiral page and do the top two boxes for the second Act V page.

Complete Act V's vocab/terms column (10+). Read 5.1-5.2 and start the events column. You can also start studying for the vocab/terms portion of the quiz we'll have on 5/23. There are 21 words/terms to know. Two terms from Act II, three terms from Act III, 9 terms/words from Act IV, and 7 from Act V.

Complete Act V's vocab/terms column. You need 10+ words. 

Read 4.3-4.5 and finish Act IV, page 1 in your spiral.

Read 4.4 and add to the events column.

Read 4.2-4.3 and add to the events column. 

Read 4.1. Start the events column. Complete the vocabulary column. Many of the words you'll need to know are on page 844. Also, go back to Act III, page 2 and do the half-page writing assignment. Argue that Romeo or Juliet has a better relationship with their parents. Incorporate two concrete details into your answer.

Read 3.2 and 3.3 and add events to the events box.

Finish reading scene 3.1. Add a few events to the events column. You should be just about done with your IR book. Have another of your choosing with you for Monday. It can be another memoir or autobiography, or anything of your choosing.

Finish the last two scenes of Act II (this is only 4 pages). Complete the events box. There is no third spiral page for Act II, but I recommend you read questions 1, 4, 5 and 7 on page 815 and think about the answers. Remember the vocab words you need to know should be on Act II, page 1 of your spiral. Those same words can all be found on page 794 in the textbook.

You have one more day to work on your poem if you need it. You must turn in a hard copy. Read 2.5 and add a couple of events to your first spiral page for Act II.

Read 2.3-2.4 and add some events to the spiral (7th period has already done this reading). Do a 3rd draft of your original poem. This time, fix the syllables if you aren't happy with the score of your second draft. ALSO, everyone must incorporate either a grave accent or an apostrophe to either elongate or eliminate a word. Your end product though must still contain exactly 10 syllables per line. Bring a hard copy to class.

Read 2.4, add two events, and answer the question in the bottom right box of the Act II 3-square.

Read 1.5 and complete the vocab/events 2-square.

Read scene 1.4 and add two events.

Read 1.2 and 1.3 and add to the events box for Act I.

Read 1.2 and study for the quiz on the words from page 766.

Rewrite each line of Act I's prologue. Do this in your spirals. Your new lines DO NOT need to be a consistent amount of syllables long, but please do put each new line on it's own line of the spiral page. Preview Act I for all your assigned character's lines. Know how to pronounce all words. Read fluently and according to punctuation. Be prepared! You will get reading points for consistently proving that you have practiced your lines.

Pick two roles you are willing to play/read as we read Romeo and Juliet aloud in class (7th period has already done this). Also, see the attachment which contains three questions about your recent poetry assignment. Submit your answers to turnitin.com before class. The quiz of words from the bottom of 766 has been moved to Tuesday, 4/17.

A rewrite of your poem is due. You must make any 10 consecutive lines of your original poem exactly 10 syllables a piece. You must submit hard copies of the original and the rewrite at the beginning of class. Additionally, you must complete the 10+ vocabulary and terms for Act I of Romeo and Juliet. You must include the three terms and five vocabulary words from the bottom of page 769. (For 7th period, the completed 10+ vocabulary words are actually due on 4/10).

Spend 15-20 minutes working on your poem. The requirement is to change any 10 consecutive lines of your poem to be exactly 10 syllables each. This is due 4/11. At that time, you will need to turn it in along with the original. So, be sure to make a copy before you starting making changes to the Google doc.

Spend 20 minutes trying to adjust your poem so that you have 10 lines that are exactly 10 syllables long. If you want to work on your poem during the film tomorrow, you must have a hard copy. You will not be allowed to use the Chromebooks.

Read "Perseus" in your textbook and do the top two boxes. 7th period must also do the bottom left box.

1. Find and define (along with parts of speech) three vocabulary words from "Perseus" in your textbook. This is due 3/23.

 

2. Begin to think about how you will change ten lines of your poem to be exactly 10 syllables each. This may be due 3/30.

Complete the 2-square in your spirals. It includes the 5 questions from page 1053 and the 6 questions from page 1060.

Have a new IR book with you. It should be an autobiography or memoir.

The other half of you will share your memorized poems today. Look back at the directions for 3/13 and make sure you'll have everything you need. 

1. Everyone should read the poem on 1054 and 1055 in your textbooks. Additionally, answer all of the questions at the end of the poem in the top box of a 2-square in your spirals.

 

2. For half of you, your original poem on your IR book is due. It must be about a significant character and/or his or her experience. It must include a great title. It must be 10+ lines long. It must demonstrate thought and care. It must include three or more lines of metaphor and/or simile. It must be memorized and beautifully read aloud. You must also bring two hard copies to class.

 

*7th period should do #1 by 3/13 and #2 by 3/14.

Timed writing, day 2 of 2.

1. Timed Writing

You will do a timed writing in class this day. You will get much of the period to work on this in-class essay. You must submit it to turnitin.com by the end of the period (7th period will get until the end of the period on 3/7). The prompts will be based on the passages we looked at during the 3/2 seminar. 

 

2. Spirals

I will begin to get spirals into Aeries while you do the timed writing. Entering the spirals will take several days. Please remember to have your spirals handy for the rest of the quarter.

 

3. Poetry Readings

All students will present on 3/13 or 3/15.

Remember that I will grade spirals in class over the next several classes. Have yours with you each day in case I ask for it. You have already completed the vocabulary portion of the quiz. You will have a small multiple choice quiz on the plot of chapters 10-12 on Friday. Additionally, each of you will participate in a Socratic seminar about one of three passages from chapters 10-12 on Friday. You will not know which of the three passages you'll need to seminar on until you come to class. 

 

 

Reread each of the below passages. Take notes (don't mark the book). Your notes must be handwritten and fit all on one side of a standard spiral page. You will want to speak about both style (difs) and theme for whichever group you get pulled into. So, it's best to find at least one example of theme and one d, i, f, and s for each of the three passages. Optimize your chances of earning full points by doing all four steps for each of your difs examples. Have your book in class.

ANNOTATED BIBLIOGRAPHY: Everyone's annotated bibliography (AB) is due. You must have 6 or more citations, each followed by a small paragraph. Have easybib.com construct the citations for you. Alphabetize your citations. Follow each citation with a 2-3 sentence summary of the source. Next answer 2 questions with 1-2 sentences each. 1. What 1 concrete detail (CD) from the article might you use? The CD's can be paraphrased. And 2. Why is this CD valuable or helpful? Don't number the citations or your answers to questions within the paragraph below a citation.

 

PRESENTATION: Some of you are presenting this day. Your presentation should address what readers of your IR book can learn about obscure or nuanced history. Your thesis is the response to this prompt. Your thesis will probably sound something like "readers can learn a lot of what was happening in New England during the 1970's by reading the book titled..." This presentation must include 2 CD's from 2 different sources on your AB. Here, the CD's should be DQ's. Additionally, your presentation must explicitly address whether or not your CD's are consistent with the plot of the novel you read. The presentation should be 2-3 minutes long and contain no more than 6 slides. I suggest breaking your 6 slides up in this way:
