Math 2+ (Period 4) Assignments

Term
2017 - 2018 School Year
Department
Mathematics
Description
Integrated Math 2+ is the second course of a three-course accelerated sequence including Integrated Math 1+, Integrated Math 2+, and Integrated Math 3+.  Students taking this course sequence will be prepared for AP Calculus AB after completing Integrated Math 3+.  This course satisfies the California Common Core Standards for Integrated Math 2 and one-third of the Integrated Math 3 course and is intended for ninth or tenth grade students who plan on taking AP math courses.  Integrated Math 2+ builds and strengthens students’ conceptual knowledge of functions, linear functions, equations, inequalities, sequences, exponential functions, systems of linear equations, systems of linear inequalities, quadratic functions, one variable descriptive statistics, correlation and residuals, analyzing categorical data, mathematical modeling, both coordinate and transformational geometry.

The purpose of Integrated Math 2+ is to develop students' ability to think mathematically and develop their conceptual understanding of mathematics and procedural fluency in mathematics.  Integrated Math 2+ will extend the mathematics students learned in earlier grades and continue the development of concepts in Number and Quantity, Algebra, Functions, Modeling, Geometry, and Statistics and Probability within the Common Core Standards and for higher level mathematics courses.  Extensive use of models/real-world situations, manipulatives, graphs, and diagrams will help students see the connections between different topics promoting students’ views that mathematics is a set of related topics as opposed to a set of discrete topics.  In addition, students will learn to solve problems graphically, numerically, algebraically, and verbally and make connections between these representations.  Students in this course will learn to use mathematical models to understand real world events and situations, and use algebraic reasoning to manipulate these models for deeper learning. The course is designed for gifted/talented students that are planning on studying in a STEM field in college.  The Common Core Standards themselves were already designed with depth in mind.  We will be covering those standards at an accelerated pace.  As such, students will be expected to demonstrate a greater degree of responsibility, prepare for more challenging assessments, and engage in and contribute to a generally higher level of discourse.
