Welcome to Freshman English! The class is officially titled "Survey of Literature and Composition." The word "survey" means we are examining a broad range of American and global literature and informational text, and the word "composition" refers to writing. Refer to the class Syllabus and your Quarter Calendar (which you received in class) for a closer view of what we will be accomplishing this year! The Quarter Calendars will also be attached to this page as PDF files as they appear. The first page is for Period 5, and the second for Period 6.

Note: If you are planning to do a play write-up for this semester, it is due before the Final Exam! Remember that you must follow the play write-up instructions in a hand-out you received earlier this year. If you cannot find the hand-out, email me and I will send it to you.
1. Romeo & Juliet: Read Act V, Scene 3 from line 171 to the end, and complete the study guide.
2. Quotes for Final Exam: Create a document with a proper, double-spaced heading in the upper left corner, titled "Final Exam Quotes." Find four quotes about Romeo and Juliet being intensely sad about love, and wildly happy about love. You should have a sad and a happy quote for Romeo, and a sad and happy quote for Juliet. Type up the quotes, citing each quote in parentheses with Act, Scene, and line number as shown on your hand-out on preparing for the Final Exam. Print and bring to class.
3. Green Literature Textbook: Find and bring your big green literature textbook to class to turn in. Also remember that on the Final Exam day (Monday, June 4) you must bring your own copy of the blue Adventures in Reading book in which we are reading Romeo and Juliet so you can turn it in.

Homework due Friday, December 15 for Period 5, and Monday, December 18 for Period 6:
Final I-Search Paper!
Remember that the library printer is not dependable! Do not plan to print your entire I-Search paper in the library! You may need to find a way to print your paper outside of school!
Remember also to submit to Turnitin early on Sunday evening, because it may take awhile for the O.R. to come up. You need to print the entire O.R. to turn in with your paper.
Your final I-Search document begins with your opening paragraph, and ends with your Works Cited page. These are going to be the pages with the "header" (your last name and the page number in the upper right-hand corner of each page).
Your cover page is in a separate document, and your outline is in a separate document. You will print these pages separately.
There is a checklist on your hand-out titled "Writing the I-Search Paper" - make sure you take a look at it, and also look at the rubric to make sure you are meeting all expectations! Remember that the body of your paper (which means all the paragraphs) must be at least four full pages long.
Here is the order of pages. Do not staple yet - we will staple in class:
1. Cover page, printed in color if possible
2. Outline, with no heading in the upper left and no header in the upper right. The title of this page is just "Outline" (no quote marks). Make sure you have revised your outline, taking out questions you decided not to research. Also make sure that if I corrected one of your outline questions when you wrote it in a body paragraph, that you also correct the question on your outline.
3. Main paper: The first page has your last name header in the upper right, with a 1 (page number). The title (that also appears on your cover page) is on the first line of the first page, centered. The entire document should be evenly double-spaced, and each page (including the Works Cited page) has the header. Next are the following, in this order:
a. opening paragraph
b. first body paragraph, which discusses organizing research and your business letter
c. first regular body paragraph, which reports your research (cited correctly)
d. second regular body paragraph
e. third regular body paragraph (only three regular body paragraphs required)
f. fourth/fifth regular body paragraphs, IF you wrote them
g. closing paragraph
h. Works Cited page, which starts at the top of the next page (make sure you
have removed the header in the upper left from when you first turned in the
Works Cited page - title of this page should just be Works Cited)
4. Email reply: printed copy of the reply from your business letter recipient, IF you received one
5. Turnitin O.R.: the entire Text Only Originality Report from Turnitin
6. I-Search Rubric: entire packet titled "Writing the I-Search Paper" with rubric on the last page
Make sure you have made all corrections from your graded paragraphs, outline, and Works Cited page!
One last thing to check: Every source you cite in the body of your paper must appear on the Works Cited page - make sure you have added in sources you found after you first were assigned to create the Works Cited page. Also make sure that every source on your Works Cited page is cited in the body of the paper - if you included a source, for example, that you did not end up using, then it should not appear on your Works Cited page!
If you have any questions, make sure you email me!

Assignment
Homework due Wednesday, December 13 for Period 5, and Thursday, December 14 for Period 6:
1. I-Search Closing Paragraph: On a new Google Doc, type your closing paragraph, following the checklist in your hand-out titled "Writing the I-Search Paper." Include a proper heading, title the doc "I-Search Closing Paragraph," and under the title type your main research question. Remember that for the last sentence, you must create a clincher by circling back around to your hook or something that appears in your opening paragraph.
2. To Kill A Mockingbird: Complete pages 3 and 4 on your study guide for Chs. 9-10.
Due:
Assignment
Homework due Monday, December 11 for Period 5, and Tuesday, December 12 for Period 6:
1. I-Search final body paragraphs: If you have three Roman numeral sections on your outline, you will be writing your final body paragraph. If you have four Roman numeral sections, you have two paragraphs to write. If you have five Roman numeral sections, you will write that last body paragraph on your own, but remember the final paper is due on Friday, December 15 for Period 5, and Monday, December 18 for Period 6, so you need to plan your time!
You are only required to have three Roman numeral sections on your outline, so if you decide to eliminate extra sections, you may, if you are confident that your other sections cover your topic. Make sure you cite correctly as these paragraphs will only be peer-evaluated and you will not have the benefit of my corrections.
Do not add these paragraphs to your other docs - start a new doc and title it "I-Search last paragraphs." Make sure your main research question appears under the title. PRINT YOUR DOCUMENT!
2. I-Search cover page: Attached are three examples, below (keep scrolling, and if the image is huge, change the PDF to 100%). To create the cover page, do the following:
- Find a great, vertical image (relevant to your topic, of course) to fill up the cover page as much as possible. Do not stretch it out top to bottom or side to side - find an image that fits an 8 1/2 x 11 page well. You can also use a horizontal image and crop it to a vertical rectangle, then enlarge it. Also make sure the image enlarges well - if it goes all fuzzy, then find one that is still sharp when enlarged. When the image is positioned, "send to back" so text can appear in front of it.
- Near the top of the page, find a spot to insert a big title. It can be a light-colored spot where you can have black text, or a dark-colored spot where you can reverse-out the text in white or another color. Your title must be creative in some way - see my examples!
- Near the bottom of the page, find a spot to insert text. It can be a light-colored spot where you can have black text, or a dark-colored spot where you can reverse-out the text in white or another color. Type in a proper "heading," as shown on my example cover pages, below. If you cannot find a good place for text directly on the image, you may have to place the text in a colored text box, as shown on the third example, below.
- Print your cover. You do not need to print this practice cover in color, but if you can print your cover for your final paper in color, that would be great!
Note: The images in my second two examples (global warming and bees) were not the right shape - the global warming one was square with a black background, and the bee one was a long, thin, horizontal rectangle. I cropped both of them to fit. The globe one still did not fill up the page, so I inserted a black box on top and on the bottom. You may need to get creative to make an image fit and still look right!

Homework due Thursday, December 7 for Period 5, and Friday, December 8 for Period 6:
1. I-Search Works Cited Page: Type the document, following the format exactly. You have a sample Works Cited page hand-out, plus two hand-outs on citing sources (the Quick Guide will be easiest to use). Make sure you indent the second and third lines of each citation, and do not put any extra space between citations. It is tricky to divide URLs when they are too long for a line, but I showed you how to do that in class. Print your page!
2. To Kill A Mockingbird: You have a study guide for Chs. 9-10, but for this homework assignment you only need to do questions 1-13 in the study guide, which means the first two pages only.
Due:
Assignment
Homework due Tuesday, December 5 for Period 5, and Wednesday, December 6 for Period 6:
1. I Search Second Regular Body Paragraph: Bring up your Google doc of your first regular body paragraph that has been returned to you, graded. Change the date in the heading, and change the title to "I-Search First and Second Regular Body Pargraphs." Then make all corrections and changes to your graded paragraph, and add the new body paragraph to the doc. Make sure you cite your sources correctly this time!
2. Word Roots: Complete list 10.

Homework due Friday, December 1 for Period 5, and Monday, December 4 for Period 6:
1. I-Search Outline: Type, according to your hand-written outline in the hand-out titled "Organizing and Planning Your Research," and print. This is the time to revise your outline, if needed!
2. To Kill A Mockingbird: Read and complete the study guide for Chs. 7-8.
Due:
Assignment
Homework due Wednesday, November 29 for Period 5, and Thursday, November 30 for Period 6:
1. I-Search Research 4: You need to find two new sources, and take a half-page of notes on each. Make sure you write out the source information correctly in MLA format at the top of the page. You should concentrate this research assignment on questions from your outline for which you still do not have answers! Your sources can be regular articles or periodical articles from the Internet, articles from online databases, from print periodicals, from a book, or from a video, such as a TedTalk - in other words, you can use any sources for this assignment, as long as they are new.
2. I-Search First Regular Body Paragraph: Make sure you pay attention to the checklist on your hand-out on "Writing the I-Search Paper" for a regular body paragraph, and read the sample paragraph again on the second page of the hand-out. This is the first time in the paper you are reporting your research facts, and citing them. Make sure you cite every fact from your notes with a parenthetical reference, or by naming the source in the sentence. See your hand-out that we discussed in class titled "Integrating and Citing Quotes in MLA 8th Edition Format." Note: This doesn't mean you only cite quotes - you cite any fact you wrote down in your I-Search Journal!

No homework over Thanksgiving Break!
Except for this:
Be present with your family - no going off in a corner with your cell phone.
Talk to your grandparents and great-grandparents - they grew up during the Depression years and/or WWII and/or the Civil Rights movement and/or the Vietnam War -
they are eye witnesses to historic events and have tales to tell!
One of them may even have gone to Woodstock!
And help out in the kitchen for the big feast -
don't leave all the work up to Mom, Dad, and Grandma!

Homework due Thursday, November 16 for Period 5, and Friday, November 17 for Period 6:
1. Vocabulary 3: Make flash cards and study for the test. You will be expected to spell each word, know the definition of each word, and be able to use each word by inserting in the correct blank line within a story.
2. I-Search First Body Paragraph: On your Google doc for your I-Search opening paragraph, make corrections to the opening paragraph according to your graded hard copy, then add the first body paragraph on the same Google Doc right below the opening paragraph.
Follow the directions carefully on the checklist in the hand-out titled "Writing the I-Search Paper." Note that this is not a regular body paragraph in which you will be reporting your research findings - this is a very specific paragraph telling how you organized your research, what you knew before you started researching, and all about your business letter. There is not a sample paragraph in your hand-out, so I have attached one, below. Note that I highlighted the section you are writing for this homework assignment. Make sure you do not just copy my sample!

1. I-Search Business Letter: Follow directions on hand-out carefully. Remember you can ask only two questions or three questions in the middle paragraph. Submit to Turnitin, and print your letter and the Turnitin Text Only Originality Report. Make sure you have the instruction packet in class, also.
2. To Kill A Mockingbird: Complete the study guide for Chs. 3-4.

Assignment
Homework due Friday, October 27 for Period 5, and Monday, October 30 for Period 6:
1. I-Search Research 1: Find two Internet sources with good information regarding your research topic. Take a half page of notes for each source. Your notes should be in the form of brief bullet points. Follow the format on the example on the back side of the cover page of your I-Search Journal.
Make a good attempt to write out your source information at the top of the page in MLA format, or at least copy out the URL of the website absolutely accurately.
Do not take notes on just anything - you should look specifically for information that answers questions on your outline!
2. I-Search Business Letter Recipient: Find a professional in the field you are researching to whom you can write. You need the person's name, position (their job title), company name, company address, and the person's email address. Type up the information in a document and print. An example of what your document should look like is attached below.
Talk to your parents first, because they may know someone who works in the field you are researching. Writing to a person your family knows gives you a better chance of receiving a reply.

Homework due Wednesday, October 25 for Period 5, and Thursday, October 26 for Period 6:
1. To Kill A Mockingbird: Read Chs. 1-2 and complete the study guide - note there are four pages.
2. Word Roots 7-8: Make flash cards and study for the quiz.
This work is substantial, so do not try to do it all in one night! Do one assignment the first night, and the other assignment the second night.

Assignment
Homework due Monday, October 23 for Period 5, and Tuesday, October 24 for Period 6:
1. Vocabulary 3 Skit: See the sample skit script, attached below! First, look at the sentence in Mockingbird that contains your assigned word. Then look up the word in a dictionary, being careful to choose the definition that is relevant to the use of the word in the book.
Now come up with a very short skit that illustrates your word, and type it up with a proper heading, in Times New Roman 12 pt. Include the word, the part of speech, the definition, the sentence from the book, and describe your prop, which you must bring in.
If you are working alone, you can still have two or more people in the skit - you will just recruit someone in class to present the skit with you. You do not need to memorize your skit - you can read from your script when you present.
Your prop is a visual, so can be a picture, an item, etc. Bring your prop to school on Monday (for Per. 5) or Tues. (for Per. 6) and we will store it in the classroom until it is your turn to present. See your hand-out in the Vocabulary section of your English binder on Vocabulary Presentations! Here is the rubric for the skit:

2. I-Search: Complete the last page of the hand-out titled "Evaluating Research Sources for Validity and Brainstorming Possible Sources for Research." Really spend some time on this - research online to find good websites, and look at Amazon.com under the Books tab for ideas for books. Ask your parents for help if you get stuck - they will have some ideas on where to look!
3. Shoe Drive and Book Drive: Please look through your closet and your bookcase, and see if you have "gently used" shoes in any size, and/or books for ages 9-13, that you could bring to school for the shoe and book drives!
Due:
Assignment
Homework due Thursday, October 19 for Period 5, and Friday, October 20 for Period 6:
1. Rewrite Business Letter: On your rewrite, make sure you change the date of the letter, and make all changes according to every correction or comment made by Mrs. K. in red ink! Then submit the letter to Turnitin under Business Letter 1: Revision 1, and print your new business letter and the Turnitin Text Only O.R. Make sure you have the following in class: 1) your original letter packet, 2) your new, printed letter (signed with a legible signature), and 3) your new O.R.
2. I-Search: Complete the worksheet on Organizing Your Research. You are creating an outline of your research questions after you organize them into groups of similar questions. You must use all 15 of your starred or checked-off questions. When your questions are grouped by similarity, write them in the Roman numeral sections of the worksheet, beginning with the line marked 'A.' As you add each question, mark it B, C, D, etc. Then, on the line next to the Roman numeral, come up with a more general question that describes the ABCD sub-questions. Look carefully at my example of Oxford questions!
3. March 3: Bring your book!
Due:
Assignment
Homework due Tuesday, October 17 for Period 5, and Wednesday, October 18 for Period 6:
1. I-Search: Complete worksheet on Developing Questions. You must come up with 25 questions you can ask about your research topic. The first 10 or 15 should be easy, then you really need to think creatively to come up with more questions. Ask for help from a parent, if needed.
2. Whimsy: Complete the worksheet on Similes.

Assignment
Homework due Thursday, October 12 for Period 5, and Friday, October 13 for Period 6:
Family Member Biography: The final paper is due! First, make the changes indicated on your graded body paragraph - I may have also made some corrections on your opening paragraph that you should address. Then add your short closing paragraph with the following: a) a reminder of your subject's special quality, b) a reference to the narrative you provided in the body paragraph, c) and end with a clincher that circles back around to your hook.
Proofread before you print. The paper (not including the heading and title) should be between 400 and 500 words. Submit to Turnitin, and print the Text Only Report. Make sure you read the Format Checklist and the Rubric, and follow directions!
In class you should have your full biography, the Turnitin O.R., and the full instruction packet for the paper.

Homework due Tuesday, October 10 for Period 5, and Wednesday, October 11 for Period 6:
1. Vocabulary 2: Make flash cards and study for the test on Genres of Writing. You will need to spell the words, know their definitions, and identify an example of each genre of writing.
2. Word Roots: Complete list 8.
Due:
Assignment
Homework due Friday, October 6 for Period 5, and Monday, October 9 for Period 6:
Family Member Biography Paragraph: In class you revised your opening paragraph. Now write your main body paragraph for the biography, adding it to the opening.
We discussed in class that your biography should revolve around your subject's special quality, or about a central, life-changing event in their life. Therefore, you cannot include all the answers to your questions in the essay. In class you marked five or six interview answers that are relevant to the theme of the biography (the person's special quality or life event), so work to include those in the main body paragraph with good transitions between thoughts. Each fact about the person should support the special quality or life event.
You are only required to write one long body paragraph, but if you see the need to break it up into two paragraphs, you may.
Print your document, with both paragraphs, to bring to class.
Note: The Format and Checklist instructions for the biography say that the paper should be 400-500 words long, but I forgot to change that number on the rubric, which says 600-700 words! We will change that in class - your paper will be 400-500 words long, which is about 1 1/2 or 2 pages, double-spaced.
Due:
Assignment
Homework due Wednesday, October 4 for Period 5, and Thursday, October 5 for Period 6:
1. I-Search: Choosing and Narrowing a Topic: On the last two pages of the hand-out, develop three ideas for three different topics for the I-Search paper. TWO of your ideas must be from the numbered, highlighted topics on your Personal Profile. The third idea can be from the profile, or something completely new.
Hints: If you are researching a current issue, such as terrorism, do not begin your main research questions with Why or How; instead, using "In what ways..." covers the topic better. If researching a profession or opening a business, this is a good way to start: "What education, training, knowledge, and experience do I need to..."
2. Whimsy: Complete the worksheet on Metaphor. Be careful!
Due:
Assignment
Homework due Monday, October 2 for Period 5, and Tuesday, October 3 for Period 6:
Business Letter: You have instructions and a rubric for a writing a business letter to either Lorraine Hansberry (the author of "On Summer"), or Stan Lee. These letters are in the form of practice and will not be mailed, but will still generate a Writing grade for you.
We started the letterheads in class. Make sure you strictly adhere to the format of a business letter, shown on pg. 2 of your hand-out, and read the Format Checklist and the Rubric carefully so you know the requirements and how to earn a good score.
Remember you are writing three paragraphs: a short opening and closing, and a longer middle body paragraph. Your opening introduces you as a student, and tells Hansberry or Lee why you are writing. The longer body paragraph enlarges on your request, and also lets Hansberry or Lee know you admire them and are aware of their accomplishments. The last paragraph closes with a request for a reply, and thanks the recipient for reading the letter.
Print your letter (preferably in color). Submit to Turnitin, and print the Text Only Originality Report. On Monday, you must have the printed letter, the printed O.R., and your instructions hand-out.

Assignment
Homework due Thursday, September 28 for Period 5, and Friday, September 29 for Period 6:
1. Family Member Biography Opening Paragraph: Type an opening paragraph for your family member biography. You need the following: A hook, the person's name and relationship to you, the particular quality that makes this person special or stand out, a reference to the short narrative you will tell about the person, and a closing sentence. Follow the opening paragraph with the first line of the next paragraph (see my examples).
Carefully read my two example opening paragraphs on the class hand-out, and take another look at the hand-out on writing a good essay opening and closing. Print your document!
2. Word Roots: Complete list 7.

Homework due Tuesday, September 26 for Period 5, and Wednesday, September 27 for Period 6:
1. Family Member Biography: Gather the answers for your questions for your family member. Make sure you contact that person immediately to set up a time to interview him/her, or arrange to email your questions. Make sure you politely let the person know that you need the answers back the night before they are due!
Your answers should either be neatly printed on your question document, or typed below each question. If any of your questions have yes/no answers, see if you can extend them a little so you get a better answer. For example, instead of, "Did you like having five children?" you should ask, "Did you like having five children, and why or why not?" PRINT YOUR QUESTION-AND-ANSWER DOCUMENT!
2. March 3: Bring in the book!

Make sure you contact that person to get their permission to write about them (if they are living). Then type up 15 to 20 questions you will ask about that person's life, including asking about profound events in their life that may have had a big influence on them. Leave room to write in answers. Homework due Tuesday, September 12 for Period 5, and Wednesday, September 13 for Period 6:
1. Vocabulary 1: Make flash cards for the Vocabulary 1 words (the literary devices) and study for the test. You need to know how to spell each word, what the definition is, and be able to recognize the device used in a sentence. On the back of each flash card, just write the definition of the word, and an easy example, such as, for metaphor: The comparison of two unlike things, without using like, as, or than. "I was a tiny boat drifting in a sea of mighty ships."
2. Word Roots: Complete lists 5 and 6.
You are moving into suffixes, now, so you will need to search the Internet for information, such as going to m-w.com and typing in the suffix with the hyphen, such as "-able." You will need to scroll down, as first "able" appears, then farther down "-able" as a suffix appears. Here is a good site, also: https://msu.edu/~defores1/gre/roots/gre_rts_afx3.htm

Homework due Friday, September 1 for Period 5, and Tuesday, September 5 for Period 6:
Three-Day Weekend Coming Up for Labor Day!
1. Word Roots: Make flash cards for Word Roots lists 1 and 2, and study for the test. You have a flash card sheet. All you need on the back of your flash cards are the definition of the word root (the prefix, such as ad- and com-) and your example word. So on the back of the card for com-, you would write "together" and "combine." You may choose your own example word, but choose one that is easy to remember. You will only be tested on those two things - you do not need to know the origins (such as Latin or Greek) and you will not need to write down the definition of your example word.
2. College Personal Statement Organizer: This task will take you awhile, so do not procrastinate! Follow directions carefully and provide complete answers. Remember that your "hook" idea must use one of the ten methods on your hand-out on writing a good essay opening.

1. Vocabulary 1 PowerPoint: Make sure you follow the instructions on the hand-out on Vocabulary Presentations. PowerPoints are worth 65 points, and note there is a grading rubric on the last page of the hand-out.
Remember that you are not allowed to use a PowerPoint template (you must choose "blank presentation") and your PP must follow a theme supported by great images.
The definition for your term must come from the packet on Analyzing Literature in the Literature section of your notebook. The terms begin on pg. 9. If you have any questions about how your term works or what it means, make sure you email me!
One of the members of your group must email me the PP, with subject line "Vocabulary 1 - Period 5 (or 6)". If you are sending me a Google Slides doc, make sure it is shared with me and/or invites me to edit.
2. "On Summer": Read the personal essay "On Summer" by Lorraine Hansberry in your big green literature textbook. It begins on pg. 656. Complete the questions on the study guide thoughtfully and thoroughly.

In the first column enter the language origin of the word, such as Greek, Latin, Old English, etc. In the second column enter the definition of the root. In the third column write a word that begins with the root, and which fits the root definition, and write the definition of the word. The roots 'a-' and 'be-' have been done for you.

Homework due Friday, August 18 for Period 5, and Monday, August 21 for Period 6:
1. English Notebook: You need to bring in a "View" 3-ring binder and eight dividers, as I showed you in class. When you walk through the door, the tabs on the dividers should be marked and in the proper order in your binder. Your Quarter Calendar should be slipped into the front cover.
2. Signed Class Contract: You fill out the front of the last page in the class Syllabus packet, and your parents fill out the back page. You will be turning in this page only - the rest of the packet belongs in the General section of your English notebook.
3. "The Process": Read Bill Watterson's article on his process for creating the Calvin and Hobbes cartoons, and complete the questions in the study guide.
Remember: If you are missing any of the above assignments, you will automatically have detention after school, and will be calling one of your parents to let Mom or Dad know you did not do your English homework. This consequence is not negotiable, even if you have a Fall sport.
