1. What is the effect of the reader on O’Connor's prolific use of details (dress, colors, etc.)?

2. What does she mean by the word “mean” when she says of the trees that “the meanest of them sparkled?” The word “mean” will appear again, so this is a kind of foreshadowing. Does the passage contain any other foreshadowing elements?
