Assignment

If you are interested in being recognized in the Biomedical pathway, we have included some information for clarification.

Student Recognition
Students who complete the requirements of their chosen pathway earn the AP + PLTW student recognition, a qualification that demonstrates to colleges and employers that the student is ready for advanced course work and interested in careers in this discipline.

To earn the recognition, the student must satisfactorily complete three courses in the pathway – one AP course; one PLTW course; and a third course, either AP or PLTW – and earn a qualifying score of 3 or higher on the AP Exam(s) and a score of Proficient or higher on the PLTW End of Course (EoC) assessment(s).

If you would like to apply for this recognition please do the following by June 30 of this year.

Go to: pltw.org
Choose: Our Programs
Scroll Down to: More
Then choose: AP + PLTW
There will be a link farther down on the page for you to apply.

Reminders:

-If you still have to present tomorrow, please come early and get all set up.
-If some ppl would be willing to bring whipped cream and strawberries that would be nice.
-Don't forget to do some studying for your test. Also, some of you have asked if others would share their presentations, and so far I haven't received any to share... so... please share amongst yourselves or something!

Finally, I saw a pretty short, really interesting clip about precision medicine today. If you have a few minutes for a study break, I recommend it. Here's the link:

Hello all,
Having listened to everyone’s clinical trials presentations, I got to thinking about the ethics of placebo use in cancer clinical trials. Did a bit of research and found an interesting article (link below). I’d like to discuss in class soon. Please read and consider as soon as you can. :)

Here is an email I received from someone at CHLA.  There is a neurologist there that would be open to students shadowing.  Please reply and fill out the applications if you are interested in this experience.  Here is what was sent to me:

Good Morning Ms. Budd,

I have confirmed with our Academic Affairs department here at CHLA. I have attached the forms that are required along with vaccine records, current TB test and current Flu shot records.

Per the coordinator in Academic Affairs she asked that I notify that this is only an observership not an internship and no credit.

Please feel free to contact me with any questions or concerns you may have. My contact information is below.

Thank you,

Here is the information we discussed in class.  Please make sure if there was someone absent today and you said you would text or email them that they get this information.  The attachments are for two different things.
1.  Volunteer application - If you want to gain experience in the medical field by volunteering at Kaiser.  This is non paid and you can talk with the Kaiser representative about what hours you can give.  I believe the deadline is April 16th.
2.  2018 SYEP - This is an employment opportunity.  As stated in class, you can not have a family member employed at Kaiser and preference will be given to low income students.
Application is also attached.

Please email me with any questions you think I may be able to answer.

Have a wonderful break!

FYI- This is from our Intern Coordinator at SPHS.

Hi - would you be able to notify your classes that it's time to sign up for the January internship workshops? (juniors and seniors only) These workshops are pre-requisites to applying for available internships through our program. This semester we have the following medically-related options: USC Keck School of Medicine, Huntington Family Medicine, Catz Physical Therapy and Pasadena Ronald McDonald House (this one is a stretch, but they do work directly with families staying at the house).

They can email or stop by my desk in the counseling center with any questions or to REGISTER - visit sphsinternships.weebly.com.
