Assignment

Final Exams:

Period 4:  Wednesday, June 7 - 10:20 a.m. - 12:20 p.m.
Period 5:  Wednesday, June 7 - 8:00 a.m. - 10:00 a.m.

Bring the following:

1.  Your blue Adventures in Reading book, marked with your quotes for the Romeo and Juliet essay
2.  #2 pencil
3.  All ungraded Romeo and Juliet guides, which I will collect and score
4.  Your big green literature book, if you haven't already turned it in

To prepare for the Final Exam:

1.  Romeo and Juliet test: Go over your Romeo and Juliet study guides for Acts IV and V only. Quotes on the test will be strongly representative of each character. You will be expected to identify literary devices from the play, but you should be able to identify examples of metaphor, personification, foreshadowing, allusion, etc. without even reading the play!

2.  Romeo and Juliet essay: The essay (which is really a long analysis paragraph) will focus on the paradoxical nature of love. A paradox is something that reflects opposite ideas, and yet they work together in a single entity. Remember that I am giving you the thesis statement. Look at the quotes you have chosen, and think about how love can make a person the happiest they have ever been, and the most miserable they have ever been. Perhaps also give some thought to a hook regarding opposites, like sweet and sour, night and day, dark and light, bittersweet, etc.

Suggest you find four quotes: one quote from Romeo and one from Juliet when they are happy about love, and one quote from Romeo and one from Juliet when they are miserable about love.

Remember to change the date on your heading. Remember also that this time you need a creative title, followed by an identification of the person about whom you are writing, and their relationship to you. The creative title should reflect a main point you are making about this person. So if I were writing about my dad, my title might be:

Master Craftsman
A Biography of my Father, Arthur J. Sherman

If I were writing about my great-grandmother, my title might be:

Girl of the Sea of Cortez
A Biography of my Great-Grandmother, Liberata Beltran Gonzales

IMPORTANT: According to the class rules, Writing assignments are due on the day they are due, whether you are present in class or not! If you are absent on Tuesday or Wednesday, you must still submit the document with the body of your paper (not the cover or outline) to Turnitin by the time your class begins!

I-Search Final Paper!  In class I gave you a new rubric for the paper - see attached, below. You need to do the following for the final paper:

1.  Write the missing body paragraph from one of the Roman numeral sections on your outline!

2.  Make sure you have made all the corrections from your graded paragraphs on the paragraphs in the final paper.

3.  Make all corrections on your outline and Works Cited page.

4.  Make any corrections on your cover page.

5.  Copy and paste your Works Cited on the next page after your last paragraph of the paper - do not begin the Works Cited on the same page as the closing paragraph! The Works Cited page will have your header with last name and page number - do not leave the "heading" that was on your original paper in the upper left corner.

6.  Submit the main document of your paper to Turnitin, and print the Text Only Originality Report. You do need to submit the cover page or the outline.

In class you need the following, but do not staple together until you are in class:

1.  Cover page, printed in color, if possible.

2.  Outline - no heading in the upper left! Just titled Outline at the top of the page.

3.  The paper itself, beginning with your opening paragraph, followed by the first body paragraph that tells how you organized your research, etc., then the three regular body paragraphs, then the Works Cited page. All these pages should have the "header" in the upper right corner.

4.  Your Turnitin Text Only Originality report.

5.  Your packet on "Writing the I-Search Paper," plus the new rubric.

Good luck!

Homework due Friday, March 10 for Period 5, and Monday, March 13 for Period 4:

1.  I-Search cover page: We started this today in class. See the attached sample below. Make sure you have a creative title, and the proper "heading" information at the bottom of the page, as shown in the sample. Your text must be readable, so if you cannot find a good space within your image, put your text in a colored box!

2.  I-Search corrections:  We also started the document in class for the final paper, with a "header" with your last name and the page number. Copy and paste all your paragraphs into this document in order (but remember your creative title also appears on page 1 at the top, but below the header). Make all corrections indicated on your graded paragraphs. In class on Friday or Monday, you will add your Works Cited page and make the corrections. NOTE: Also remember that you are writing one of your body paragraphs on your own! Also, do not forget to add information in one of your body paragraphs from your email recipient if you received an answer, and do not forget to add that person on your Works Cited page! If you need help with this, ask!

I-Search Second Regular Body Paragraph:  Look at your graded, typed outline and decide which paragraph you will write next. The paragraph should correspond to a Roman numeral section on your outline. Read my sample body paragraph in the hand-out on "Writing the I-Search Paper," if needed, and look at the checklist on the first page of that hand-out to review the requirements. Then take a good look at your first graded regular body paragraph to see where you went right, and where you went wrong.

Type a proper heading. Your title should be "I-Search Regular Body Paragraph 2." Under that, type your main research question word for word, then write the paragraph, double-spaced. Make sure you cite your sources correctly!

1.  I-Search Outline:  Type up an outline with a proper heading and in Times new Roman 12 point. The entire document must be evenly double spaced. I showed you in class today how to turn off the "automatic numbering" on your computer - make sure you do this. See attached sample outline.

Remember that you must Tab over from the Roman numeral to the sentence on that line, Tab over from the margin to the A.B.C.D. lines, and Tab over from the A.B.C.D.s to the sentence or question on each of those lines.

Make sure your outline makes sense, and that questions are listed in the proper sub-categories!

2.  I-Search Research:  In your Journal take a half-page of notes for each of two new sources, for a full page of notes. Make sure you look at your outline to see which of your questions have not yet been answered, and concentrate your research on those questions!
Created: Thursday, February 9 3:58 PM

Due:

Assignment

Homework due Thursday, February 9 for Period 5, and Friday, February 10 for Period 4:

I-Search first regular body paragraph:  View your hand-out on writing the I-Search paper and see the checklist for writing a regular body paragraph. You can write any body paragraph for the paper; it does not need to be the one that will follow the last paragraph you wrote. Each Roman numeral section on your outline (in the packet of stapled hand-outs - it's the one titled "Organizing and Planning Your Research") equals at least one body paragraph.

You are writing in the first person, and now reporting what you learned from your research. See my sample body paragraph on finding a place to live at Oxford for an idea of how your paragraph should look (in the hand-out on writing the I-Search). Remember not to just report facts, but to include commentary on your search in the form of reflection (from your I-Search Journal).

Remember that you must cite each source in your writing. See the second page of the hand-out you received in class today, titled "Integrating and Citing Quotes - MLA 8th Edition" where I explain how to cite quotes or other researched facts in a paper with multiple sources. You can do this two ways (the source is in red in the examples below):

1.  By identifying the source in your sentence:  In an article by educator Kim Kadletz on teen cell phone use, she said that 87% of teens check their phones over 100 times per day.

2.  By identifying the source with a parenthetical reference: Studies have shown that 87% of teens with cell phones check their phones over 100 times per day (Kadletz).

Note that with the parenthetical reference, the period goes after the end parenthesis.

Also remember that in a parenthetical reference, if the source does not have an author name, cite the source with the first word of the article, in quote marks.  If the title of the article is "Teen Cell Phone Use Becoming an Obsession," then the parenthetical reference would be:  ("Teen").

Your paragraph should be about a page long, double-spaced! You do not need to include your two previous paragraphs in this document; just type your main research question below the title. Title can be "First regular body paragraph."

Assignment

Homework due Friday, February 3 for Period 5, and Monday, February 6 for Period 4:

I-Search First Body Paragraph:  This is a specially-formatted paragraph, so follow directions carefully. See the requirements below. Type the paragraph, with a proper heading and double-spaced, in Times new Roman 12 point, and print to bring to class. Also see a sample paragraph below.

First body paragraph:  Need the following:

q Topic sentence on how you organized your research

q A few sentences on how you organized your research, including telling the sub-categories of questions you decided on in your outline

q What you knew about your topic before you started researching

q How you found the person to whom you wrote your business letter (including what websites you visited), the questions you asked in your business letter, and if the person has responded, briefly summarize the answers, saving the detailed answers for the appropriate body paragraph.

Sample paragraph:

First, I organized my questions into sub-categories. My sub-categories are on applying to Oxford, transferring units to Oxford, the types of D.Phils available at the university, the cost of earning a D.Phil, how and where I will live on or near the campus, and the cost and methods of transportation. When I visited London many years ago and took a tour of Oxford, I was surprised and gratified to find out that I could earn a Master’s and D.Phil in a three-year program. I was told that the yearly cost to attend was comparable to an American state university, which at that time was about $10,000. a year. When I began to look for a person to whom I could write a business letter to seek information, I started at the Oxford website. In the Literature Department (which is very different from the Classic Literature Department) I found the name and email address of an assistant professor in American Lit., named Edith Barker. I wrote and asked her if she could tell me if post-graduate students were provided housing and/or offices on campus, if she felt it was feasible to live off campus, and in her opinion, how many hours per week I would spend on academic work. I was very lucky to receive an answer from her within a week. She provided me with positive information on my questions, so I now feel more than ever that my plan to attend Oxford can actually work.

Homework due Wednesday, February 1 for Period 5, and Thursday, February 2 for Period 4:

I-Search Research:  For this assignment you must find two sources, and take a half-page of notes (or more) for each source, totaling at least one page of notes. At least one of the two sources must be a periodical, or you can have two periodical sources.

Both your sources must be found in the school databases. For periodical articles, your best bet is ProQuest. Your I-Search hand-out titled "Evaluating Research Sources for Validity and Brainstorming Possible Sources for Research" has a list of the school databases, their URLs, and the User IDs and Passwords to access the sites. This hand-out may be stapled in the packet of I-Search hand-outs with your questions, your outline, etc.

To cite your source in MLA, look at #15 in your hand-out titled "Entries for 'Works Cited' Page - MLA 8th Edition." Remember that every comma and period counts!

When you have organized your questions, come up with a good, general question regarding each group (such as, "What experience do I need to play a Division I sport?") and write your Roman numeral sub-topics and A, B, C, D sub-questions on the outline form. Second BODY paragraph for compare-and-contrast essay:  Using your outline as a guide, write the second body paragraph for your compare-and-contrast essay. First open your opening paragraph and first body paragraph on your computer or on Google Docs, and type the second body paragraph below (because when we evaluate the body paragraph, we must see the thesis statement).

The paragraph must be typed, double-spaced, in Times New Roman 12 point, with a proper heading, and PRINTED. You will not submit to Turnitin.

Opening Paragraph:  Write the opening paragraph for your compare and contrast essays on two non-fiction articles. See your outline: the opening paragraph must have a hook, the thesis statement, a reference to your two sub-topics, and a closing sentence. See your hand-out on writing a good essay opening and closing to get ideas for your hook. That hand-out has an example of an opening paragraph.

The paragraph must be typed in Times New Roman 12 point, double-spaced, with a proper heading, and printed. An opening paragraph is very short - maybe five or six sentences.

Homework due Friday, October 14 for Period 5, and Monday, October 17 for Period 4:

Outline for Compare/Contrast Essay:  Complete the outline in pencil. You have your study guides on your two chosen non-fiction works you are comparing, and your thesis statement is ready to go. Think carefully as you complete the outline: the CDs and quotes are easy, but the topic sentences are a bit more of a challenge.

Most challenging of all is the commentary: Remember that your commentary tells how your CD and quote support both the topic sentence of that paragraph, and most importantly, how they support the thesis statement.

You may complete the outline in "note" form; what you write does not need to be in complete sentences.

Homework due Wednesday, October 12 for period 5, and Thursday, October 13 for Period 4:

1.  Business Letter Rewrite:  To rewrite, bring up your original business letter to Lorraine Hansberry or Stan Lee on your computer. Do "File - Save As" and add the word "revision" to the name of the file. Then make every change indicated in red pen on your letter. Notice the little circled numbers here and there? Those numbers match up on the Essay Comments Guide you have slipped into the back cover of your English notebook. For example, "25" means "be specific," and "12" means "do not use slang or contractions."

Print your new letter, and also submit to Turnitin and print the new O.R. On Turnitin, the name of the assignment is "Business Letter 1 - Revision 1." In class, make sure you have the entire packet with your original letter, plus the new letter and the O.R.

Business Letter to Lorraine Hansberry or Stan Lee.  Follow directions carefully! Be aware of the spacing requirements, and what belongs in each of the three short paragraphs of the body of the letter. Print your letter, then submit to Turnitin and print the Text Only Originality Report. This is a writing assignment, so is due to Turnitin on the due date whether you are in class or not!

Note:  Microsoft Word has the factory default set on your home computer or laptop to insert extra space every time you hit the Enter key. To correct this on your computer, when you are in Word, first click on Home next to File at the top left of the monitor. Then click on the down-facing arrow in the lower-right corner of the Paragraph choice to the right. When the dialogue box pops up, look for Spacing on the left. "Before:" will be set to 0 pt, but "After:" is set to 8 pt. Change the 8 pt to 0 pt (caution: do not change to 'Auto'). Then, at the bottom, click on OK. A pop-up will ask if you want to make the change for that document only, or for "All documents based on the Normal template?" Click that second choice, and this problem will not appear again! Click OK, then you are set.

If you are using Google Docs, there is a separate problem, which is that the default spacing is set to 1.15. Be sure you set your Line Spacing to Single, instead.

Martin Luther King Jr. and Malcolm Speeches Analysis Guide:  You only need to complete the online research in this packet on the lives of MLK and Malcolm X. Do not do any of the Tone analysis - we will do that together in class.

Seems that the Malcolm X website is no longer available, but you can find answers to the questions on any website about Malcolm X. For question 1.e., however, here is where you can go (note the underscore before the X):

Scroll down to the section sub-titled "Advocacy and teachings while with Nation," and you can find appropriate answers.

For the Martin Luther King Jr. research, when you go to nobelprize.org, the Biography of MLK is now #12 in the list, so just scroll down to find it.

College Personal Statement!  Make sure you follow instructions carefully on the hand-out about the Personal Statement, noting the Checklist for format, and the rubric on how your essay will be graded. Remember that I changed the word count length of the essay to 350 words instead of 500 words. See a sample document attached below!

Follow the plan you created on your Personal Statement Organizer.

Keep checking your word count: if you are using Word on your computer, the word count appears in the lower-left corner of your monitor. The count includes your heading, title, etc., so to check the word count of your essay, highlight the essay text only, and the word count at the lower left will change. If you are using Google Docs, check your word count by highlighting your text (without including your heading, etc.), then click on Tools and Word Count. The font on Google Docs is set on Arial 11 points, so make sure you change to Times New Roman 12 point.

Submit to Turnitin and print the O.R.:  For submitting to Turnitin and printing the Text Only Originality Report, follow the instructions on the Turnitin hand-out!

In class on the due date, you should have the following:

1.  Your printed essay
2.  Your printed Turnitin Text Only Originality Report
3.  Your hand-out on writing the essay that has the rubric on the last page
4.  Your Personal Statement Organizer

Any questions, make sure you email me!

Note: When you are in a Word doc on your computer at home, it probably has the default set under Paragraph to include 8 points "Spacing After" every time you hit the Enter key. Go to Paragraph on Word, and change the 8 pt "Spacing After" to 0 pt.
