Final Exams:
Period 1: Tuesday, June 6 - 8:00-10:00 a.m.
Period 2: Wednesday, June 7 - 8:00-10:00 a.m.
Period 7: Friday, June 9 - 9:00-11:00 a.m.
Bring the following:
1. Your blue literature book, marked with your quotes for the Julius Caesar essay
2. #2 pencil
3. All ungraded Julius Caesar guides, which I will collect and score
To prepare for the Final Exam:
1. Julius Caesar test: Go over your Julius Caesar study guides. Quotes on the test will be strongly representative of each character. You will be expected to identify literary devices from the play, but you should be able to identify examples of metaphor, personification, foreshadowing, allusion, etc. without even reading the play!
2. Julius Caesar essay: The essay (which is really a long analysis paragraph) will focus on an author's message regarding your chosen topic (betrayal, loyalty, politics, manipulation, and the personal quest for power). You might want to give some thought to a strong author's message regarding your theme, and one that can be supported by the quotes you have chosen. Read over your quotes - collectively, they should give you some ideas. Perhaps also give some thought to a hook!

Homework due Friday, June 2 for Period 1, and Monday, June 5 for Period 2:
CHANGE ON THE CALENDAR!
Because we need to focus on the last of the Julius Caesar study guides, we will not have the test on Word Roots 25-26, so there is no homework due!

Final I-Search Paper!
View checklist for format in your hand-out titled "Writing the I-Search Paper," and scrutinize the rubric. Make sure you have addressed all requirements, including submitting to Turnitin and printing the Text Only Originality Report.
Attached is a PDF sample of a completed I-Search paper, with notes on the side identifying the paragraphs. View at 75%. Note that the header in the upper-right corner begins with page 1 on the first page of text, and ends with the final page numbers on the Works Cited pages. Check carefully to make sure you have a minimum of seven paragraphs in your paper: 1) opening, 2) first body paragraph about organizing research and writing your business letter, 3-4-5-6) regular body paragraphs on outline sections I-II-III-IV, 7) closing paragraph. I graded two body paragraphs - you are on your own for the other two!
The cover page and outline are not part of this larger document, because if so, the header would appear on those pages (which you do not want). Print them separately. Note that the outline includes the main research question.
Here is the order of pages (but do not staple! We will staple in class):
- Cover
- Outline
- Body of paper with all paragraphs, and header with last name and page numbers
- Appendix page(s)
- Works Cited page(s)
- Copy of email reply if your email recipient answered you!
- Turnitin Text Only O.R.
- Packet titled "Writing the I-Search Paper"
Here are some reminders:
1. If your email recipient answered you after you wrote your opening, make sure you revise your opening to include that he/she answered, and what they said.
2. If your email recipient answered and you used their information in the paper, do not forget to list that person as a source on your Works Cited page, formatted as an email.
3. If you used information from any sources found after you wrote your initial Works Cited page, add them to the page!
4. If you did not actually use and cite any one of your sources already on your Works Cited page, remove them from the page! You still need a minimum of 10 sources, however.
5. If the A-B-C-D sections from your outline are not in A-B-C-D order in your body paragraph, then change the order on your outline so that outline section matches your body paragraph.
6. Do not wait until the morning the paper is due to submit to Turnitin - it may take a while for the O.R. to show up.
Due:
Assignment
Homework due Friday, April 14 for Period 1, and Monday, April 17 for Period 2:
1. I-Search Closing Paragraph: Make sure you view the checklist for the requirements of the paragraph in your "Writing the I-Search Paper" hand-out. Write a good clincher as the last sentence, which circles back around either to your hook, or to something else memorable from your opening paragraph.
2. I-Search Cover page: I have attached examples below in a PDF - change the size to view at 50% to see each page separately. An appropriate image must cover most of the page. Your creative title must be placed in a position that makes it easy to read - in a color box, if needed. Your "heading" information belongs near the bottom of the page, either centered or in an appropriate position so the image is not interfering with your text. Place in a color box, if needed. The date should be your due date. Print in COLOR, if possible.
Due:
Assignment
Homework due Wednesday, April 12 for Period 1 and Thursday, April 13 for Period 2:
1. I-Search body paragraph: First, make sure you have revised your outline according to the comments on the graded outline. Then write a second regular body paragraph, reporting on your research. Take a look at your graded paragraph to see where you went right and where you went wrong! Make sure you type your main research question above the paragraph. Print the document.
2. Night: Read Ch. 4 and complete the study guide.
Due:

Homework due Thursday, March 30 for Period 1, and Friday, March 31 for Period 2:
If you committed to bringing a treat, don't forget to bring it! You can drop it off in the classroom in the morning if you want.
1. Night: Read and complete the study guide for Ch. 3.
2. Word Roots: Complete lists 19-20.
Due:
Assignment
Homework due Tuesday, March 28 for Period 1, and Wednesday, March 29 for Period 2:
1. I-Search Appendix Page: Follow directions on hand-out BUT type a proper heading in the upper left. You are looking for statistics, graphs, or charts relevant to your research, but images are acceptable, also. Make sure you cite your source with the full source information (just as it will appear on your Works Cited page when you add it) below the source, graph, or images.
2. Vocabulary 8 PowerPoint: For this list on Confused and Misused Words, you must get your information from the little American Heritage book titled 100 Words Almost Everyone Confuses and Misuses, which is in the classroom or behind the circulation desk at the library (just ask for it). If you are referred to Merriam-Webster Online instead, make sure you write down the specific definitions that are indicated on the vocab. list. When you email me the PowerPoint, type "Vocabulary 8 - Period 1 (or 2)" on the subject line.
Due:
Assignment
Homework due Friday, March 24 for Period 1, and Monday, March 27 for Period 2:
1. I-Search First Regular Body Paragraph: Follow the checklist for "Subsequent Body Paragraphs" on "Writing the I-Search Paper." Your paragraph must have a topic sentence and closing sentence, and report both your questions and your answers. Remember to properly cite the source of every fact from your notes, and also remember to include reflection about the research process. Proofread before you print.
2. Night: Complete the guide for Chapter 2.
Due:
Assignment
Homework due Wednesday, March 22 for Period 1, and Thursday, March 23 for Period 2:
CHANGE ON THE QUARTER CALENDAR!
1. I-Search Outline: Make sure outline is formatted properly! Revise your current outline if needed. New Information: Please type your main research question on the outline, word for word, between the title and the Roman numeral I section.
2. Vocabulary 7: Make flash cards and study for the test. Make sure you know which of the fallacies fall within these three groups: Fallacies that change the subject, fallacies that miss the point, and fallacies that appeal to emotion.
Due:
Assignment
Homework due Monday, March 20 for Period 1, and Tuesday, March 21 for Period 2:
1. Night study guide: Complete Chapter One.
2. I-Search First Body Paragraph: You know the drill: Times New Roman, 12 pt., proper heading, double-spaced. Follow the directions and checklist carefully in the hand-out titled "Writing the I-Search Paper." You are not reporting any of your researched facts in this paragraph! Title the doc "I-Search First Body Paragraph" AND precede the paragraph with your main research question, word for word! Do not include the main research question within the body of the paragraph, however.
Due:
Assignment
Homework due Thursday, March 16 for Period 1, and Friday, March 17 for Period 2:
1. Research 6: Two sources, any type, with a full page of notes between the two sources. Do not forget to match up your notes with your outline numbers.
2. Night Introduction: Type a document with a proper heading. The first part of the assignment involves research on Elie Wiesel; the second part involves watching two short videos, and then responding to a prompt about the videos that will go into your Writing grade. The entire document must be double-spaced. Do not forget to submit to Turnitin under Holocaust Reflection and print the Text Only Originality Report.
Due:
Assignment
Homework due Tuesday, March 14 for Period 1 and Wednesday, March 15 for Period 2
1. I-Search Works Cited page: Follow directions carefully! Need proper heading, title (Works Cited), and make sure the entire paragraph is evenly double-spaced (no extra spaces between entries), and make sure all entries are in alphabetical order according to the first word of the citation. Print your document to turn in.
Note: If the source has no author, and the first word of the article title begins with A, An, or The, then put the entry in alphabetical order according to the second word. For example, if the title is "A New Law Causes Havoc," you would put in alphabetical order according to the word "New."
2. Study packet on Practice in Citing Sources in MLA 8th Edition for the test on Tuesday! You will not be tested on citing an email or interview, but will be tested on regular online sources, database sources, a print periodical, and a book.
Due:
Assignment
Homework due Friday, March 10 for Period 1, and Monday, March 13 for Period 2:
1. I-Search Research 5 (Sources 9 & 10): Two new sources, and one must be a book source! If you already found a book source, then the two sources can be online or print periodical sources. Need a full page of notes for the two sources (approximately half a page for each), with reflection and match-ups to your outline. The examples for citing book sources are at the very beginning of the packet on source citations.
2. I-Search Opening Paragraph: Follow directions and checklist on hand-out titled "Writing the I-Search Paper." Your document must be in Times New Roman 12 pt., with a proper heading, and double-spaced. Title it "I-Search Opening Paragraph." I want to see some great HOOKS, and make sure your main research question is typed word for word, as approved on your "Narrowing and Choosing a Topic" worksheet! PRINT the document to bring to class, of course!
BTW, you are not turning in to Turnitin.
Due:
Assignment
Homework due Wednesday, March 8 for Period 1, and Thursday, March 9 for Period 2:

2. Word Roots: Make flash cards and study for the test on lists 17-18.
Due:
Assignment
Homework due Friday, March 3 for Period 1, and Tuesday, March 7 for Period 2:
1. I-Search Research 3: Find two new database sources from the school databases (see the second page of the hand-out on Evaluating Research) and take half a page of notes on each. Make sure you write out the source information correctly, and match up your notes with your outline.
2. Word Roots: Complete List 18.
Due:

Homework due Wednesday, March 1 for Period 1, and Thursday, March 2 for Period 2:
1. I-Search Business Letter Rewrite: Rewrite your business letter, correcting everything written in red ink! Submit to Turnitin under I-Search Business Letter - Revision 1. Print the new letter AND the O.R., and make sure you ALSO have the original letter in class with you!
2. I-Search Research 2: Find two periodical articles, and take half a page of notes on each. Do not forget your "Thoughts on my progress," and matching up your notes with a section of your outline.
Due:
Assignment
Homework due Monday, February 27 for Period 1, and Tuesday, February 28 for Period 2:
You should do these assignments in this order!
1. I-Search Evaluating Research: Read the entire document, and view my example page on possible resources for researching Oxford University. On the worksheet, try to fill in boxes with every possible source for your own topic. Surf the Internet for appropriate websites for your topic, and search the Amazon or Barnes and Noble websites for book titles. Think creatively!
2. I-Search Research 1: For this assignment you need to find two sources, and take a half-page of notes on each in your I-Search Journal. Do not research randomly - research questions from your outline in the hand-out on organizing and planning your research. Also refer to your worksheet in the Evaluating Research assignment described above. It is important to follow the example in the Journal, and write out your source information in MLA format!
Due:
Assignment
Homework due Thursday, February 23 for Period 1, and Friday, February 24 for Period 2:
1. I-Search Business Letter: Pay attention to the instructions and the rubric! Besides your printed letter and Turnitin O.R., make sure you have the instruction packet in class to staple to your documents. The score for this letter is going in the Writing portion of your grade.
2. Word Roots: Complete list 17.
Due:
Assignment
Homework due Tuesday, February 21 for Period 1, and Wednesday, February 22 for Period 2:
1. I-Search Organizing and Planning Research: Organize your 15 top questions by grouping them by category. Come up with a general heading for each category, as shown on the example outline, and on the worksheet pencil in your Roman numeral headings (each of which should be expressed as a question) and the sub-questions that go with them.
You must have at least four Roman numeral subsections (I, II, III, IV) and no more than five (V). You must have at least a question A, B, and C for each Roman numeral section, but can add D, E, etc. You must place all 15 of your top questions, but can also add questions if needed!
My suggestion was to make a copy on your printer of your questions, then cut them into strips. This is an easy way to move the questions around on a tabletop into groups of relevance so you can decide on your sub-sections before you start writing on your worksheet.
2. Vocabulary 7 Presentation: You can create either a PowerPoint or a TV commercial skit.
If a skit, use your term to persuade your television audience to buy a product, vote for a candidate, etc. Type up the script with a proper heading and print.
If a PowerPoint, you need five slides: Title slide, definition slide, example slide, Yes-No-Why slide, and Sources slide. Your example must be a video clip that illustrates your term, such as a commercial or a part of a movie scene. If the scene is longer than a minute, indicate on the slide where I will need to move the bar to the time at which the section begins. Email me your PowerPoint, and type "Vocabulary 7 - Period 1 (or 2)" on the Subject line of the email.

Homework due Monday, February 13 for Period 1, and Tuesday, February 14 for Period 2:
1. I-Search Questions worksheet: Complete information on page 2, and then brainstorm 25 questions about your main research question. Last, read over your 25 questions and put a star or check mark in the left margin for the 15 most important questions.
2. I-Search Business Letter Recipient: Find a recipient to whom you can email. This person must be a professional (active or retired) in the field of your main research question. Type up and print a document with proper heading, double spaced, in Times New Roman 12 point. Include the following:
- Your main research question
- First and last name of your recipient
- Recipient's title or position or profession
- Name of recipient's place or work, such as company or university name
- Recipient's business street address
- Recipients's email address

Word Roots 15-16: Make flash cards and study for the test.
Due:

Homework due Tuesday, February 7 for Period 1, and Wednesday, February 8 for Period 2:
I-Search Choosing & Narrowing a Topic: Follow directions carefully to develop three topics into main research questions on the last two pages of the packet you received in class.
Remember that two of the three must be from the topics I numbered on your graded Personal Profile. The third topic can be anything you want - the topic did not need to appear on your Profile, or, you can choose a third topic from your Profile.
Your main research questions should have some aspect of arguability; in other words, your research should lead to a conclusion regarding your gathered information and evidence. Remember that you are not writing a report, such as providing expository information on the planet Jupiter or on how the electoral college works. You will be conducting an investigation on a narrowed yet multi-faceted question, for which you research relevant information in order to (we are hoping) thoroughly answer your question.
Be thoughtful about this assignment, because you will spend the next twelve weeks researching one of your three main research questions!

Homework due Monday, January 30 for Period 1, and Tuesday, January 31 for Period 2:
Vocabulary 6 Skit: Prepare a courtroom skit for your assigned term regarding inductive reasoning or inductive fallacies. Your typed and printed script should show the term being used as a persuasive device in a court of law. This might mean that the prosecuting attorney is trying to convince the jury that the defendant should be found guilty, or that the defense attorney is trying to convince the jury that the defendant should be declared innocent. As Johnny Cochran said, "If the glove don't fit, you must acquit!"
You must have a prop in the form of physical evidence to show the jury. This can be an item, a photo, a chart of statistics, etc.

Homework due Tuesday, January 24 for Period 1, and Wednesday, January 25 for Period 2:
Study for the Final Exam! The Period 1 final is scheduled for Tuesday, January 24, from 8:00 to 10:00 a.m. The Period 2 final is scheduled for Wednesday, January 25, from 8:00 to 10:00 a.m See the hand-out on preparing for the Final:
1. Vocabulary Test: You will be tested on the terms in the first four vocabulary lists. These are the literary and rhetorical terms. You must know the definitions, and be able to identify an example of each term. You will not be tested on functions. Quiz yourself with your flash cards for at least 20 minutes each day between now and Tuesday!
2. Short essay on Antigone: Decide on an Honors-level, arguable, profound author's message (remember: this is a message to the audience from Sophocles) for Antigone. Find four quotes in the play to support your author's message, and flag them in your book. Your author's message should not contain the words "you" or "your"! If your author's message is advice to the audience, it should contain a "because" clause.
What do you need to bring to class for the Final? Your Antigone book marked with your quotes, and a #2 pencil.
Due:

Homework due Friday, January 20 for Period 1, and Monday, January 23 for Period 2:
Vocabulary 5: Make flash cards and study for the test. You will not be responsible for spelling the words (you will have a word bank) and there are no functions for these terms - you will need to know the definition of each term and be able to recognize each term in an example.
You will also need to know the following: considering affirming the antecedent, denying the consequent, denying the antecedent, and affirming the consequent: which two are sound deductive arguments, and which two are unsound deductive arguments?

Read the prompt carefully and follow directions: You are writing about one of the twelve themes, and how something said during discussion brought you to a new realization regarding that theme, as relevant to both novels. Must have at least one concrete example and one quote from each book. As always, write a good hook and a good clincher. See the rubric below so you know how your Reflection will be graded.
2. Prepare for the Vocabulary 4 test: Make flash cards and study for the test. As on the previous tests, you will be tested on spelling, definitions, functions, and being able to recognize an example of the rhetorical device.

Homework due Thursday, November 17 for Period 1, and Friday, November 18 for Period 2:
1. Operation Walking Shield: Remember that the goal is to provide a joyful holiday for two six-year-olds on an Indian reservation in cold, cold North Dakota. If you have not yet contributed your $2.00 (about the cost of a large Coke at McDonald's), remember to bring to the next class - it will be your last chance to contribute as the backpacks are due the day we return from Thanksgiving Break. And you are receiving an entire week to be thankful for what you have, so share that thankfulness with a little kid!
2. True Diary Quote Tags: In preparation for the Socratic Seminar, find one quote for each of the twelve themes for discussion listed on your Socratic Seminar hand-out. Mark the page of each quote with a Post-It or other device, such as a paper clip and a tag. Each tag must be marked with the topic (such as "Disloyalty") so the topic name shows outside the page edge. The tag should be placed near the quote.

Homecoming! No homework due in class Friday, November 4!
Operation Walking Shield: Please remember to bring $2.00 (or more) in the next week to contribute to Christmas backpacks for two six-year old Indian Reservation children in North Dakota! We have not yet discussed this in Period 1, but will on Friday.
Due:
Assignment
Homework due Wednesday, November 2 for Period 1, and Thursday, November 3 for Period 2:
1. Ancient Greek Theatre Research: Research from a minimum of three sources for your assigned topic on the hand-out. You can copy and paste sections from a web page onto a Word doc, or print entire web pages. If you copy and paste on a doc, make sure you also copy and paste the URL of the site! Highlight (with a yellow highlighter) the information which is most relevant to your topic if you print entire web pages.
For Period 1: Sorry I did not get the MLA format guide to you during class! I will distribute on Wednesday; in the meantime, the document is attached below. Numbers 13, 14, and 15 on page 4 will be most useful to you. Read the general information on the first page, also, and especially note #s 10-13, which discuss the most recent changes for the 8th Edition.
2. Vocabulary 4 PowerPoint: Review the rubric at the end of the hand-out on Vocabulary Presentations to make sure you address all requirements and number of slides for your assigned term or literary genre. Email to me, and type on the subject line of the email "Vocabulary - Period 1 (or 2)."
Attached below is the vocabulary list with the definitions and functions of the words. Remember that your examples of the rhetorical device must illustrate how it is used persuasively.
Make your PowerPoint colorful and creative, following a theme with great images (those doing "epitaph" could have a spooky graveyard theme!). If you can find a short video to illustrate your example of how your term is used, all the better. If the video is not short, choose the 30 to 60 seconds of the video you want the class to view, and on that slide tell at which time-stamp number the video should begin and end. Make sure your text is large and readable, and do not forget to set up a Sources slide at the end and cite the URLs of your online sources.

See attached document below for a breakdown of my analysis for President Lincoln's Second Inaugural Speech.
Due:
Assignment
Homework due Thursday, Sept. 22 for Period 1, and Friday, Sept. 23 for Period 2:
1. Roots 5 & 6: Make flash cards and study for the quiz.
2. Tone Shift Analysis: Following directions carefully, write a tone shift analysis for your assigned section in the packet. Begin by placing the speech or article in context, such as writing "In his resignation speech, President Nixon's initial tones were..." or "In an article explaining why Nazi troops abandoned Rome to the Allied Forces, the initial tones in the article are..."
After identifying initial tones, tell how the tones contribute to a larger idea, such as author's message, conflict, etc. (see list below). Make sure you include short quotes to support your tones. Then identify the tones after the tone shift, again telling how they contribute to a larger idea. Finally, tell how the four tones and the shift contribute to a larger idea of analysis.
Submit to Turnitin under Tone Shift Analysis, and print the original Word doc and the Turnitin Text Only Originality Report.
Choices for extending your analysis are to relate the tones to:
Mood, theme, author's message, plot, characterization, conflict, foreshadowing, or suspense.
Due:
Assignment
Homework due Tuesday, Sept. 20 for Period 1, and Wednesday, Sept. 21 for Period 2:
1. True Diary: Complete study guide for pp 197-230 (last pages!)
2. Word Roots: Complete Lists 5 and 6. These are suffixes. You can find them on the Merriam-Webster website at m-w.com by typing in the suffix including the hyphen. So, for example, you would type in -able. On the next screen, the first word will be "able," so you need to scroll down to "-able." Merriam-Webster will give you the origin, but these other suffix sites will not, so you will need to ask about origins in class:
3. For Period 1 only: Vocabulary 2 TV commercial skit, if you did not already turn in.
Due:
Assignment
Homework due Friday, Sept. 16 for Period 1, and Monday, Sept. 19 for Period 2:
1. Personal Statement (College Essay) Opening Paragraph: Write your opening paragraph in a typed document, with a proper heading and using Times New Roman 12 pt. Include the prompt #, the exact wording of the prompt, and tell your topic. See the hand-out attached below. Period 1 students: if you would like a hard copy of this hand-out, stop by my classroom on Thursday! You do not need to submit this paragraph to Turnitin.
Your paragraph needs a hook, a reference to your narrative, and either your word-for-word message, or your message worded similarly if you want to save your word-for-word message for your closing paragraph. I also want to see the first line of your second paragraph in which you write your narrative, so I can see the transition you create between the opening and narrative. See the attached hand-out below.
2. Word Roots 3-4 Quiz: Make flash cards and study for the quiz on Lists 3 and 4.
3. Vocabulary 2 Skit: (Due Tuesday, Sept. 20 for Period 1, but you will earn extra points if you turn in on Friday; for Period 2, the script is due on Monday, Sept. 19) First look up the definition of your rhetorical term as it relates to persuasive speech. Then look at the function of the term, and decide what product, service, or charitable agency you could sell or promote in a television commercial, using your assigned rhetorical strategy to sell or promote the product or service or charity. A commercial is usually between 15 and 30 seconds, so keep it short. You must have a prop for your skit. Do not actually use your word in the skit; the class will guess what strategy (rhetorical device) you used.
Type your script, with a proper heading, using Times New Roman 12 pt. Bring to class to turn in. The script must have the definition and function of your word above the script dialogue, so you can present that information to the class after performing your skit.

Homework due Wednesday, Sept. 14 for Period 1, and Thursday, Sept. 15 for Period 2:
CALENDAR CHANGE!
1. Vocabulary 1: Make flash cards for Voc. 1 words with a) definitions, and b) functions. If you can squeeze in a short example, also, that would be helpful for you. You will be tested on spelling, definitions, function, and identifying examples of the devices.

You cannot do the Vocabulary 2 skit, because you do not yet have the list!
Due:
Assignment
Homework due Monday, Sept. 12 for Period 1, and Tuesday, Sept. 13 for Period 2:
Change in calendar! The Vocabulary 1 test has been moved to Wed./Thurs.
1. Word Roots: Complete Lists 3-4.
2. Personal Statement Ideas: Type up information for three, different possible essays, following the format shown on the hand-out. You must choose a minimum of two topics that I have marked as #1, 2, or 3 on your Personal Profile, choosing the best prompt to go with the topic. Your third topic can be from the Profile, or can be a completely new topic, as long as it is appropriate for one of the four UC prompts. Submit to Turnitin and print the Text Only Originality Report to turn in with your Ideas document.
Note: You must develop a plan for three different topics; however, the three topics could possibly all be for the same prompt. For example, for the prompt on what you sets you apart from other applicants, you could write about your family dynamics AND (in a separate essay idea) a personal talent AND (in a separate essay idea) a risk you took. So you do not need to develop essay ideas for three different prompts, but the essays must be on three different topics.

2. Study for the True Diary Test: The test is on pages 1-117. The first three packets cover these pages, and you have them in your possession. If you are familiar with the study guides, you will do well on the test. The test questions are copied and pasted from the study guides!
