Optional Prompts:
1. According to the article, the greater amount of time a virus spends in contact with humans, the more likely it is to become contagious. Using concepts from evolution, explain why this might be the case. Additionally, discuss what sort of ecological/environmental variables may cause this increased exposure.

2. If a pandemic were to occur as a result of H7N9 (or a similar virus) spreading worldwide, predict how it would affect the human population: immediately, 25 years post eradication of the pandemic, 100 years post eradication of the pandemic, 10,000 years post eradication of the pandemic.

3. In what ways is the human population better equipped to combat a pandemic? In what ways are we more vulnerable to a pandemic?

Assignment

1-2 Paragraph Answers 2 Points Each

1. In Contagion, Roger the custodian says, “I’ve got people too Dr. Cheever. We all do,” in response to overhearing him inform a friend that she should leave Chicago. Discuss the importance and dangers of the government being able to withhold or disclose health-related information from/to the public.

2. Pose 5 ethical questions that arose from the movie.

3. The paramyxovirus Nipah virus (of which MEV-1 is based off of), came from the large and small flying foxes (bats) of Malaysia. A fruit eating bat that was the carrier of the virus was responsible for spreading the disease to pig farms and thus to humans in April of 1999. In the end, this resulted in 257 cases and 105 deaths. The Niaph virus caused brain and respiratory diseases. Research the term, zoonotic disease. Explain zoonotic diseases in your own words and discuss why the frequency of zoonotic diseases may be increasing.

4. R-naught of a virus is the amount of people that an individual with the virus is likely to infect within the infectious period. In the movie, the r-naught of MEV-1 is 4. Historically diseases like measles and pertussis have r-naught values of 12-18 and 12-17. Discuss the characteristics of a disease that you think would contribute to a higher r-naught value. Also, discuss the characteristics of a society that may contribute to or reduce the spread of a disease.
