Digital Photography is a yearlong course that focuses on understanding the basic operations and functions of a digital SLR (single lens reflex) camera and the manipulation of its settings for creative visual expression and communication. Students will complete this course with a greater understanding of the history of photography, photographic elements of art and principles of design, composition, and lighting. They will have hands on experience in using Adobe Photoshop and other software applications to explore creative and experimental possibilities for processing and manipulating photographs. Topics included are Black and White photography, Portraiture, Action Photography, Photojournalism, Architecture/Urban Landscape, Still Life, and more.

Assignment: “ABCs”
Each week, 5-10 photographs will be due. Pay attention in class!
Photographing
Each student will turn in a composition containing 26 images. Each image will have a letter from the alphabet. Each letter needs to be found, not created.
The letters need to be objects that were not originally intended to be letters. The letters need to be clear, in focus, juxtaposed against an uncluttered background.
Photoshop
Your document size should be 8.5x11 (Resolution/dpi @300).
You will need to resize each of the 26 images to be placed in your document; make sure you plan this out ahead of time, so they all fit and you won’t need to start again.
Save your FINAL work as LAST NAME, FIRST NAME- ABC Assignment and submit to my Dropbox.

Submit one image as "Practice" second image as "Assignment".
- Choose a Strong Subject
Choose something with a strong and recognizable shape that will be interesting enough in its two dimensional form.
- Lighting
Light should shine from the background and not the foreground. Place your subject in front of a sunset or sunrise or any bright light.
- Frame your image
Frame your shot so you are shooting with your subject in front of a nice plain, but bright background.
- Make silhouetted shapes distinct and uncluttered
Keep shapes separated. Do not overlap multiple silhouettes. If photographing people, profiles are more interesting and recognizable.
- Your photo must fit on an 8.5” x 11” page either vertical or horizontal, sized to 300 dpi saved as a jpg file (large size). It does not have to be 8.5” x 11”, just sized to fit on the page.

Architectural photographs are indirect portraits. When you study ancient societies like the Egyptians, the Greeks, and the Aztecs, you look at the architecture they left behind. The materials, style, and scale of their buildings provide clues to who the people were and what their lives were like.
In a similar way, when you take pictures of the buildings and homes in your neighborhoods, towns, and cities, you create indirect portraits of the people who live in them.
Photograph at least 10 images. Submit two images arranged on 8.5”x11” (horizontal or vertical) page.

Plan and design a still life composition. When composing the still life, choose objects that emphasize a variety of shapes and textures, and arrange the objects to reflect balance. Next create a photographic still life.
7 Tips for Creating Still Life Images
- Create Flat Lays for more interesting still life images
- Use a simple reflector to create bright and airy still life images
- Use a dark backdrop to create moody still life images
- Brighten just a portion of an image to create well-exposed still life images
- Use the Rule of Odds to create more engaging still life images
- Create a flow to make your still life images more pleasing to the eye
- Use still life photography as visual storytelling

Assignment “Eye for an Eye”
The human eye is a pretty amazing apparatus; physiological functions and complexities aside, eyes are integral to non-verbal communication and self-expression. And they play a very important role in the aesthetic qualities of the human face. Just think of how many love poems and songs make more than a passing mention of the beauty of someone’s eyes. We also have a more abstract philosophical connection with eyes: “The eyes are the windows to the soul.”
So it makes perfect sense that eyes would be a big deal in photography. What’s one of the first things any aspiring portrait photographer learns? The eyes!
Your goal is to take many creative and interesting photos. Don’t take just 2 or 3 photos and think you are done. You must take at least 15 photographs. You will turn in your BEST shot (not just a snapshot). Pay attention to composition, color contrast, the Rule of Thirds, etc…
- The focal point of your photo should be the eyes.
- Avoid dark shadows and/or direct light.
- Make sure the eyes are in sharp focus.

Your goal is to take many creative and interesting portraits of yourself. With the traditional self-portrait, you simply take a picture of yourself and show who you are and something about your life. I recommend using the timer on your camera. I would also like to see you experiment with using mirrors and other reflective surfaces. Please refer to “The Self-Portrait” handout for details.

Your goal is to take many creative and interesting photos using “FRAMING” compositional technique. Most kinds of photography benefit from building a visual frame around the subject. Frame your main subject by using doorways, windows, arches, and the space between buildings, or the enveloping branches of trees as a pseudo border. Often, you can frame a subject so that it appears alone in the frame; however, if you include further elements, these should complement the main subject, adding to the detail of the story, rather than competing for our attention.
