Particular emphasis should be placed on the use of imagery that begins in the first chapter and continues through the novel, i.e. snake, light/dark, color/lack of color, fog, geometric shapes and forms,  and stark contrasts in the landscape and river.
Themes can be notated i.e. isolation, savagery, colonialism, madness/ illness, cruelty, the dark and evil  hidden nature of man, abuse of power and any other themes that are prevalent in BOTH works.
