Period 1,3 and 5 (English Language Arts)—
- Power Sentences
- Review of Tone Unit passages - For each passage, use the handout (see stack on top of my wooden lectern) to check and see if you properly identified the author’s tone in each passage. If you got either tone word incorrect for each passage, you need to write the following information on the back of your Tone Answer Sheet.
- Evaluate what went wrong in identifying the tone.
- Clue words- did you choose the wrong clue words?
- Patterns for clue words- Did you not notice patterns? Was there a shift in tone that you missed?
- Did you write the wrong word for one or both tone? Did you not have the right definition or misunderstand the tone word you used?
- For each missed tone word, write up an evaluation of what you missed or misunderstood based on the above questions.
Work individually or with a partner on the following pages of their Reader.
- Soapstone packet - The Analysis Paragraph Section- work individually or in teams in order to finish the following:
- Page 1 and 2- highlight important information, then write a 3 to 5 sentence summary of each page at the bottom of the page in the blank space. 15 minutes
- Page 4- Read, highlight and annotate page 4, the Mark Twain prompt. When they are done reading, highlighting and annotating, they will fill in page 3 with a partner. They can help each other to understand how to fill in page 3, but not copy.- 20 minutes
- Page 5 and 6- highlight any parts of pages 5 and 6 to identify how collegeboard did the fill in the blank section differently than each student. 5 to 10 minutes
- Page 7 and 8- Read and highlight each page. Write a 3 to 5 sentence summary of each page at the bottom of the page. 15 to 20 minutes
- Page 9 and 10- Read with a partner. Highlight any information that is important or that the individual student needs to learn. 10 to 15 minutes
- Page 11 and 12- Read, highlight and annotate with a partner. Slowly fill in the blanks for each answer at the bottom of the page. 20 to 25 minutes
- Page 13 and 14- Students complete individually. Read, highlight and annotate each passage, then fill in blanks. 30 minutes
- They will not have enough time to finish all of these activities, so anything leftover just assign for homework.

AP Language Homework-
1. For Sunday- finish reading and reviewing up to page 150 The Informed Argument, 7th Edition by the end of this week, September 21
2. For Tuesday's class- Finish the Tone Section in the Soapstone Reader. Bring your SOAPSTONE Reader to class on Tuesday, ready to review the Tone Section and begin work on "The Analysis Paragraph" section.
3. For Thursday- In-class Tone Presentations resume on Thursday. When we are finished reviewing the Tone Unit, be prepared for a quiz on tone. The quiz will include 3 passages in which students will need to identify clue words in each passage, and then identify the 2 dominant tones in each passage. Remember, the author's tone is quite often different than the character's tone in a passage.
Lapham Essay- Submit file to www.turnitin.com by Wednesday night, and bring in a paper copy of your first draft to class on Thursday. We will peer edit your first draft in class, and then you will take home your essay and revise for your final draft, which will be due on www.turnitin.com by Sunday night.
