Assignment

Of the many scholarships and awards given each year to South Pasadena High School seniors, perhaps the most meaningful and prestigious are the Weldon Fairplay Awards.  With the criteria of scholarship, integrity, responsibility, good sportsmanship, and being fair to all people, it is no wonder that it is so highly regarded. Each year, three girls and three boys are selected.

The Weldon Awards were established in 1929 by William R.H. Weldon, a long-time resident of South Pasadena.  He was a member of the school board for many years and the Board President in 1929. Mr. Weldon’s interest in fair play and leadership led him to create this award, now in its 86th year.  The names of all the recipients since 1929 are on the same trophy.  In addition, each recipient receives a gold pin and a certificate.

Each year, every student at SPHS is invited to nominate a senior boy and/or girl for the Award, and a committee of 13 staff members and 12 students selects the recipients from among the nominations.

Here is the list Mr. Weldon established for requirements:

  1. Is he independent in examinations?
  2. Is he willing to assume responsibility?
  3. Is he courteous on all occasions for example, club meetings, assembly, library, classrooms, campus, etc?
  4. If in a position of responsibility does he appoint boys and girls from all groups or does he give all opportunities for service to those in his own clique?
  5. If in a position of responsibility does he assume and carry out his responsibilities?
  6. Is he willing to give service to school with an unselfish heart and without a desire for personal gain?
  7. Is he democratic in his fellowship and treatment of his fellow students?
  8. Does he reflect exceptional sportsmanship and high morals in all of his actions and words?

If you would like to nominate a senior, please go to voting4schools.com/southpasadena and select nominees by Thursday morning.

FOR TEACHERS OF SOPHOMORES AND JUNIORS, please post this info on your homework page: All SPHS students have an opportunity to nominate seniors for the Weldon Fair Play Award, which is the highest award a senior can receive from SPHS. However, the committee, made up of 4 sophomores, 8 juniors, and 13 staff members, independently selects the senior winners from the list of nominees. The students on the committee must be fair, honest, and able to vote for seniors without influence from others. You have the opportunity to vote for classmates to serve on this committee. The students you select should be known for their integrity, so please vote wisely. Please go to voting4schools.com/southpasadena and vote for one boy and/or one girl by Wednesday morning.
