Assignment: Juxtaposition

Just remember you must photograph for the assignment, no old photos.

Use manual settings only.

Definition: Simply stated, juxtaposition means placing things side-by-side for the purpose of comparison or contrast. In art this usually is done with the intention of bringing out a specific quality or creating an effect, particularly when two contrasting or opposing elements are used. The viewer's attention is drawn to the similarities or differences between the elements.

Guidelines:

  1. Take photographs of two objects with the intent of comparing or contrasting them.
  2. The photographs must have at least two elements that contain strong visual weights.
  3. The viewer should construct meaning while looking at both photographs at the same time

Assignment: “ABCs”

Each week, 5-10 photographs will be due.  Pay attention in class!

Photographing

Each student will turn in a composition containing 26 images.  Each image will have a letter from the alphabet.  Each letter needs to be found, not created.

The letters need to be objects that were not originally intended to be letters.  The letters need to be clear, in focus, juxtaposed against an uncluttered background.

Photoshop

Your document size should be 8x10 or 8.5x11 (Resolution/dpi @300).

You will need to resize each of the 26 images to be placed in your document; make sure you plan this out ahead of time, so they all fit and you won’t need to start again.

Save your work as LAST NAME, FIRST NAME- ABC Assignment and submit to my Dropbox.

2.  Lighting
Light should shine from the background and not the foreground.  Place your subject in font of a sunset or sunrise or any bright light.
3.  Frame your image
Frame your shot so you are shooting with your subject n font of a nice plain, but bright background.

Assignment-Self Portrait

self–por·trait noun \-ˈpȯr-trət, -ˌtrāt\

:  a portrait of oneself done by oneself

Your goal is to take many creative and interesting portraits of yourself. With the traditional self-portrait, you simply take a picture of yourself and show who you are and something about your life. I recommend using the timer on your camera. I would also like to see you experiment with using mirrors and other reflective surfaces. Please refer to “The Self-Portrait” handout for details.

You must take at least 10 photographs of yourself. You will turn in your BEST shot (not just a snapshot). Pay attention to composition, color, contrast, lighting, etc…

  • Your photo must fit on an 8.5” x 11” page either vertical or horizontal, sized to 300 dpi saved as a jpg file (large size). It does not have to be 8.5” x 11”, just sized to fit on the page.

Assignment

Assignment “Eye for an Eye”

The human eye is a pretty amazing apparatus; physiological functions and complexities aside, eyes are integral to non-verbal communication and self-expression. And they play a very important role in the aesthetic qualities of the human face. Just think of how many love poems and songs make more than a passing mention of the beauty of someone’s eyes. We also have a more abstract philosophical connection with eyes: “The eyes are the windows to the soul.”

So it makes perfect sense that eyes would be a big deal in photography. What’s one of the first things any aspiring portrait photographer learns? The eyes!

Your goal is to take many creative and interesting photos. Don’t take just 2 or 3 photos and think you are done. You must take at least 15 photographs. You will turn in your BEST shot (not just a snapshot). Pay attention to composition, color contrast, the Rule of Thirds, etc…

1. The focal point of your photo should be the eyes.

2. Avoid dark shadows and/or direct light.

3. Make sure the eyes are in sharp focus.

Assignment

We have a Vocabulary Quiz on Monday.

Assignment "Fill the Frame"

Create a picture where the entire image is filled with just your subject. There are three ways to do this:

  1. If you are shooting with a DSLR camera, switch to a longer focal length. This will magnify your subject in a way similar to using binoculars.
  2. Step closer to your subject. This will make them bigger in the viewfinder and on the monitor.
  3. Try doing both to deliver the best results.

Start by eliminating all the unwanted background. Don’t’ forget to turn your camera into a vertical position if the photo calls for this format. Ask yourself, “ Do I need the whole person’s body in the portrait, or all that background?”

Your goal is to take many creative and interesting photos. Don’t take just 2 or 3 photos and think you are done. You must take at least 15 photographs. You will turn in your BEST shot (not just a snapshot). Pay attention to composition, color contrast, the Rule of Thirds, etc…

Assignment

Homework--Turn in 3 images that show Symmetrical, Asymmetrical, and Radial Balance.

Balance is the appearance of equal visual weight within a composition.

Symmetrical Balance is best described as a mirror-image composition.  What is found on one side of the image is found on the other side.  This can be accomplished with one object located in the center of the image, or with equally spaced objects throughout the composition.

Asymmerical Balance still looks balanced, but objects are not centered in the frame.

Radial Balance is a circular style of composition.  This occurs when objects radiate from a central point in a an image. Radial balance is a dynamic and energetic style of composition, indicating forceful or highly focused movement.

Assignment   Elements of Art “Line”

In photography, a line is one of the most fundamental art elements. Line can serve as pathways through your pictures or as dividers and boundaries within your composition to separate different areas of your photographs.

Find as many different types of lines as possible, photograph them, and then categorize them as straight, curved, horizontal, vertical, or combination.

You will get credit (participation points) for your photos from each category.

You will turn in your BEST shot (not just a snapshot) for a letter grade.

Save your work as Last Name, First Name-Lines-Best Shot and submit through my dropbox account.

Assignment: Framing

Your goal is to take many creative and interesting photos using Framing compositional technique.

Most kinds of photography benefit from building a visual frame around the subject. Frame your main subject by using doorways, windows, arches, the space between buildings, or the enveloping branches of trees as a pseudo border. Often, you can frame a subject so that it appears alone in the frame; however, if you include further elements, these should complement the main subject, adding to the detail of the story, rather than competing for our attention.

Just remember you must photograph for the assignment, no old photos. Please refer to “How to Take Great Digital Photos” handout.

You must take at least 15-20 photographs and bring all of them to class.

You will turn in your best shot. Please save the photos as your Last Name, First Name-Framing and submit to my Dropbox.           Dropitto.me/rberberian
