If a z-score is 0, then it is right at the mean.  If a z-score is 1, then it is one standard deviation to the right of the mean.  If a z-score is -1, then it is one standard deviation to the left of the mean.  If a z-score is 1.2 , then it is 1.2 standard deviations to the right of the mean.
