Biology (Period Per. 5) Assignments

Hi,  I hope you guys are studying!!  Make sure to study protein synthesis!  AND, all the vocab that goes with genetic engineering.  It's called biotechnology on the study guide!  See you tomorrow.  Mrs. Russo

All second semester assignments must be turned in by 3:15, Thursday, June 4th..  That is this Thursday.  No late work will be accepted after that date.

 

 

2nd and 6th:  remember to bring any late work and frog lab.

 

All classes, attached are the part 1 and part 2 semester final study guides AND a PPT of a practice test.

 

STUDY!!!

Three seperate options for supplemental points:

 

1.  Research EPIGENETIC.  Write a one page, double spaced paper defining epigenetics and giving at least two specific examples.

 

2.  One page two of the GATTACA papers there are several questions titled What Are Your Thoughts and Deep Thought.  Read over those questions and pick one to really focus on.  Write a one page, double spaced paper responding to the question.  It would be great if you included quotes from discussing your questions with your peers or family members.

 

3.  Write a one page reflection on GATTACA.  This would not be a movie summary but more like your thoughts and feelings, surprises, how it relates to our studies, what your believe will happen in your future, if you would like to pick your future spouse by their "ladder", .......

To those of you who did the supplemental research on the calico cats:  I wanted to share these photos of my family pet, Rosabell.  She passed away last year at the age of 14.  She was a beautiful calico.

 

Hopefully the photo will open!!!  (My daughter posted this collage on Instagram when Rosabell died.....

Homework is to finish the Human Reproduction reading sheet you received after completing the test on Friday.  

 

You need to come to class on Tuesday with your Genetic Research Project completed and ready to hand in.  If you are doing the supplemental power point you need to have that on a flash drive OR email it me.

 

You also need to make sure to have the second paper that goes with GATTACA with you on Tuesday!!!

Write a half page, double spaced explanation of a calico cat.  Make sure to include genotypes, phenotypes, other characteristics, type of inheritance (dominant, recessive, X-linked,....).

Option:  if there is some other trait you have been wondering about you may research that trait instead.

Article Review:  Find a current article about an issue relating to Genetic Engineering (Recombinant DNA, GMOs, Cloning, Gene Therapy, Ethics related to Genetic Knowledge...).  Read the article.  Write a one page, double spaced summary of the article including specifics facts related to class notes and your thoughts and feelings about the information.  Be sure to include your source.  Be prepared to share facts (at least one good one!!) with the class.  If you have illustrations you would like to share you can email them to me:  [email protected] 

Supplemental assignment (1 point):  I took this photo in my Arizona backyard over break.  See if you can identify the two animals and hypothesize as to why this behavior is occurring.  Just write your thoughts down on a half sheet of paper with your name and period number included.

Supplemental Assignment:  For 3 supplemental points:  Today is the vernal equinox.  Write a one page, double spaced page explaining this event, any historical significance, and at lease one way it relates to biological events around the planet.  Include one observation from the world around you (day/light, stars/planets, plants, birds, moods....)  Be prepared to share one fact with the class. 

I am posting the Cell Cycle Study Questions now.  The test isn't scheduled until March 19/20 but I wanted you to have plenty of time to study.  I would recommend you start now and work on some every day.  Please don't wait until March 18 to panic about the Cell Cycle test.

I haven't been able to find a KEY to the quick check 1 or the study guide but I'm still looking.

Questions to ponder:

 

Think about what happens when a mutation has been detected that leads to cell arrest.   What are some possible consequences for the cell?  Make sure to understand what is happening during and after each consequence.  

 

(cyclins, p53, apoptosis, excision repair, ...)
