English 9 (Period 7) Assignments

There will be no seminar. Instead we need to do a third installment of the i-ready test. I will provide a snack break after the first 45 minutes. You may bring snacks to share. Make an effort to bring ones that are healthy and not messy. DO NOT have snacks of any kind delivered to the school. The test will be worth the 25 points planned for the seminar. You will earn these points by trying your best. A bonus point opportunity is available to those who show improvement in their scores from last time. Get rest and eat breakfast before this test. You may also want to bring yearbooks. We may have time to sign yearbooks during the last 30 minutes.

Reading: Read 5.3 and complete the Act V, page 1 spiral assignment.

 

Writing: See the below prompts. Decide if you want to do the last essay as a process essay or timed write. Those wanting to do a process essay should bring a first draft to class. This will enable you to get some peer feedback before the second/final draft is due at the beginning of class on 5/30. Those wanting to do the paper as a timed write will get 50 minutes to complete the essay in class on Tuesday (1st and 3rd) or Wednesday (7th period).

 

Read through 5.1 and finish Act IV's events column.

Read 4.2 and complete the Act IV, spiral page 1 v/t column. 

Read 3.2-3.3 and complete the Act III vocabulary and terms column.

Everyone must turn poem two into turnitin.com before class on Tuesday. The poem you submit must meet all the same requirements as the one detailed on the 3/4 posting. Additionally, it must contain 10 consecutive lines that all have exactly 10 syllables.

 

Also, half of you will present either poem one or two this day.You must demonstrate that you have memorized 10 consecutive lines of your poem. You must have two hard copies of the one you plan to present. Number each line on both copies.

Write a poem about a significant character or topic in your IR book. The poem must 10+ lines long, include at least three lines of non-sight imagery or figurative language. It must demonstrate thought and care. This poem must be submitted to turnitin.com before class on Monday. The presentation of the memorized poem will happen on a future date. I will announce the date in time for you to practice.

1. The IR project will be revealed on Wednesday, 2/20.

 

2. Do a rough draft of a works cited page for the TKaM paper. You will need to show me your electronic copy in class on Wednesday. It need not be perfect yet, but it should be clear that you've attempted all three entries. This is worth 10 points. The final draft must be perfect; it is worth 20 points.

 

Do this as a Google doc. Do not use easybib.com. Do consult the Purdue Owl link below and construct your own citations. Check your current TKaM entry against the Purdue Owl resource too. You will also need to reference the links to the other two sources we used for the paper. For those, see postings from 1/25 and 1/29. If you included a fourth source of your own, then you must do a works cited entry for that too.

 

 

 

Read chapter one of LotF and do the top two boxes of a new 4-square.

Complete the vocab. box for chapter 1 of LotF. Read pages 8-17. Record a few events.

 

 

Bring TKaM so that we can trade it for Lord of the Flies.

See the further updated BP's 1 and 2 attached. Fine tune your alterations to BP3 (topic sentence, cd's, citations). Then start to work on a title, hook, and conclusion with a go beyond. The total paper will be due at the end of class on Friday. I will give you the whole period to work on the paper.

See the attached three body paragraphs. The order they'll appear in the full essay has changed. The first two paragraphs have been altered in the following ways: a thesis has been added, cd's have been removed, topic sentences have been altered or added, and citations have been fixed. Read all three. 

 

For homework, you and your partner should change the last body paragraph where necessary. Consider adding or removing cd's, altering or adding a topic sentence that works as a transition, and fixing citations. Hand write the whole paragraph (with any changes you make) in your spiral notebooks. This is due at the beginning of class. 

 

Next time, you'll get at least half the period to work on a title, hook, and conclusion with a go beyond. The full essay is due on Friday.

2. Write the final body paragraph. This paragraph will be only about the #'s, the frequency of black/white relationships. This paragraph should include 2+ cd's from 2 different sources. The two links below will help. The 2nd and 3rd links from the posting dated 1/25 might also help. 

 

 

 

 

Bring hard copies to class. You'll need to print 3 if you are in a group of 2 or 3 people. Put your id #'s instead of names on this paragraph.

 

 

In class on 1/23, spend some time reading parts of each of the below sources. The numbers correspond to the numbers from that giant works cited attached to the last link of the 12/7 posting. Some of you worked with these specific sources last night. Now, read the parts I direct you to for each. Look for information that can help us determine the frequency of black/white relationships in the 1930's and/or how those couples were treated by the small and big communities of which they were parts. For today's assignment, you don't need to deal with both parts of the question. Just pick the two best cd's. Then write a paragraph. The paragraph should argue that two cd's from one or more of these sources are potentially helpful in this essay we're in the middle of. You may also consider the source you read last night if you think it's a stronger source. Right now, try not to worry about how this paragraph fits into the larger paper that we will write together. It is okay to use I, we, us in this particular paragraph.

 

1. Source 9/Read the introduction. It is approximately one page.

 

 

2. Source 44/Read the summary and the introduction. It is approximately two pages.

 

 

3. Source 131/Read the two paragraphs that start with the words "...Although nontrivial..." Do not request the full text from the website.

 

 

Write this paragraph with your same group. Bring 1 or 3 (for groups) hard copies to class on Friday.

Go to the 12/7 (12/6 for 7th period) posting. Access the last link available on that posting. Scroll down to the document's works cited. Find your assigned source. On the back side of your second paragraph, answer the following questions about this source: 

 

1. Is the source a book, part of a book, or an article?

2. Is it available online? PDF? If yes, spend 20 minutes reading it and then skip to 5. If no, proceed to 3-5.

3. Do the cities of South Pasadena and Los Angeles carry this book at any of their library branches?

4. Is it available for purchase through Amazon?

5. Does the source seem useful? Explain.

A hard copies of the draft of a 2nd body paragraph is due. If you are in a group of two or three, I need THREE copies of your paragraph. Those who are working alone only need to print one copy.

 

Use 2+ cd's; I recommend direct quotes. Your draft need not be perfect, but should be complete. Again, use id #'s.

Have a hard copy of the paragraph you started in class on Monday. Look back at the 1/14 posting for fuller directions.

 

Complete the additional DIFS 4-square assigned in class. Set it up exactly as you did the one that was due on 1/10. Please use the following passages:

 

Periods 1 and 7: "Her voice soared over the clink of coffee cups and the soft bovine sounds of the ladies munching their dainties" (Lee 311). 

 

Period 3: "The ladies were cool in fragile pastel prints: most of them were heavily powdered but unrouged; the only lipstick in the room was Tangee Natural" (Lee 307).

 

 

Remember that we are working on an essay about mixed couples in the 1930's. The question is ultimately about whether TKaM gets two facets about mixed relationships right when compared with real history. 1. What was the frequency? And 2. How were such couples treated by their communities? Today, work individually or in groups of two or three, draft a body paragraph that talks about how TKaM deals with these questions. For now, you don't need to worry about real history. How many mixed couples are there in the text? How are those people treated by the town of Maycomb? Incorporate two or more quotes into your paragraph.

Due: This draft need not be perfect; it is a draft. However, it must be complete. It must include the ID #'s, not names, of all group members, and you MUST have one hard copy in class on Wednesday for points. There is no written homework tonight. However, please think about the way "fragile" is used on page 307. 

Bring TKaM until further notice. Bring a new IR book; it can be a collection of poetry or any kind of fiction. In your spiral, finish the DIFS page we started in class. Write all four definitions. For two boxes, simply list the steps. For the other two boxes, APPLY/DO the steps. Number the steps for the last two boxes too please.

Happy new semester! Bring your copy of TKaM and your 3rd quarter IR book to class this day. The new book can be a collection of poetry or any kind of fiction.

Complete your IR project and submit it to turnitin.com before class on Monday. Look at previous homework postings for details. You should be ready to present your slides or read your essay if called on on Monday. The difs quiz will happen the day of our scheduled final.

Work on your IR project. It is a significant portion of your semester grade and is due on 12/17, NOT on the day your class meets officially for its final.

 

Remember that you choose between an essay and a visual presentation. Please use either Google docs or Google slides for this project.

 

 

*Remember that titles, hooks, and go-beyonds require inspiration. For that reason, I recommend that you work on those particular items last.

Narrow your 12 cd's to 6 and then write a thesis statement. Also, decide whether you are writing a paper or doing a presentation.

Make progress on your IR project. See the attached directions for information about exactly how far along you should be for our next class.

Go back to the 12/6 posting. Find the link for the source we read in class. Record four concrete details that might help us with our TKaM paper. Write the concrete details on the next page of your spiral.

2. Do the following three things on the next page of your spiral:

 

A. List as many examples as you can of big things in your IR book that might be worth researching.

 

B. List as many examples as you can of small things in your IR book that might be worth researching.

 

C. Consult one or more reputable sources on the time period and place in which your book is set. Consider up to 15 years prior to the setting your book. Write down the URL. Does this source contain other information worth researching regardless of whether or not the information appears in the IR book?

3. Have your new IR book with you. It must be realistic or historical fiction. You must also be able to determine where and approximately when the book is set.

During class on 10/9, set up a new 4-square and do the following things in order. If you don't finish, complete the 4-square as homework.

 

1. Do a quick write in the top left box. The question is "what can we learn about real life through fiction?" Answer with 3+ sentences.

 

 

2. Look online for reputable sources of information about life in the American South during the 1930's. Specifically we are interested in social, political, and economic realities of the time. Record the names of 3+articles and their url's in the top right box of the 4-square.

 

3. Actually read the source that looks to be the best of the three and record 3 facts you didn't know before doing this research. This should be done in the bottom left box of the 4-square.

 

1. Make changes to one of your responses to the two IR project prompts you've drafted. Print the second draft.

 

2. Have your copy of To Kill a Mockingbird with you.

 

3. Be in search of a new IR book. The text should be 200+ pages, realistic or historical fiction, and have an identifiable time and setting. You must have this book in class with you beginning 10/15.

Do a rough draft of 2 of the 4 prompts. Please do them in a single Google doc. Each paragraph needs its own good title. Print the document and bring it to class.

Finish your IR book. Make sure you have the 9/28 assignment done. Look ahead to the assignment due on 10/5 and pick the 2 of 4 prompts you'll do.
