Due:
Please complete 2.1.5 Part 1 in PLTW. You will work in groups of 2-3 in order to create a screening and Diagnostic Test Resource. Your group can complete this as a digital resource or on poster paper using markers or sharpies that have been provided for you. Here is a recap of the requirements listed in PLTW Part 1 of 2.1.5.
Screening and Diagnostic Test Resource: As a genetic counselor, you will need to help patients feel comfortable about the decisions they make regarding screening and testing. Note that the chart shown above could be overwhelming for expectant parents. There is no detail about how each of these tests are conducted or what a parent may learn from the results. Your task is to modify the chart shown in step 2 in a way that will help you explain each test to parents, as well as help them understand the risks and benefits of the procedure. Your final Screening and Diagnostic Test Resource can look as similar or as different as you feel necessary to educate your patients. Your final product should (at minimum):
- Provide a description of each test listed in the first and second trimester. Be clear about why a physician would recommend this test.
- Provide simple, clear, and easy-to-understand information for nervous parents who need help making decisions.
- Include a Venn diagram that compares chorionic villus sample (CVS) and amniocentesis. (You can include this on the back of the poster if space does not allow on the front)

Please complete all of 1.2.1. This is a simple section that you should be able to finish in the class time provided.
Due:
Please complete the intro notes and finish the section as best you can in your notebook. Make sure to take good notes on Part 2 - DNA sequencing video. The first test in class will be asking you to explain the DNA sequencing process in detail. In part 2, #6, you will need to open Sue's Automated DNA Sequence Data. I would start recording the sequence only when you can clearly see the line distinguishing the sequence line above the others. If you can not clearly see this it can be confusing. I would start recording at about #50. Many students put a paper under the sequence on the computer screen and write the sequence on the edge of the paper. When finished with the sequence ( I would stop around #230) then complete the remainder of 1.1.3. The BLAST can sometimes be tricky to use. Ask other students for help who have been successful if you are struggling. We will review next class period.
