| 1. Point of View | The perspective from which something is being told: 1st person (“I” and “we”—or any form of “I” and “we”); 2nd person (“you”--or any form of “you”); or 3rd person (“he,” “she,” “it,” “they”—or any form of “he,” “she,” “it,” and “they”) | |
| 2. Protagonist / Antagonist | The character around whom the action of the story revolves. Also, the character or thing which opposes the protagonist | |
| 3. Setting (Time/Place) | Where and/or when the story takes place | |
| 4. Exposition | The opening of a story where the characters and their motivations are revealed | |
| 5. Conflict (External/Internal) | The struggle in which the protagonist of the story is involved: external (outside the mind) or internal (inside the mind) | |
| 6. Foreshadowing | Anything that is a hint about what happens later in the story | |
| 7. Climax | The zenith (high point) of suspense where the outcome of the story can go one way or the other | |
| 8. Resolution | The unraveling (winding down) after the climax of the story | |
| 9. Plot | The sequence (order) of events of a story | |
| 10. Theme | The central general idea(s) around which the plot is built | |
