Welcome to the new school year! We want to take this opportunity to share some information with you and your sophomore, as sophomore year can impact a student’s future choices and career options. With this in mind, here are some important dates and information that we hope will help in your family’s planning for this school year.
The Counseling Department is excited to have Naviance, a web-based resource that will streamline the planning and advising system for our students, once again this year. Naviance is a revolutionary tool that helps counselors, parents, and students become even more actively engaged in making educational decisions. Helping students increase awareness of their post-secondary options helps them to achieve at higher levels. Thanks to the generous financial support from our wonderful PTSA, your students will be able to create a personalized success plan that connects their learning to meaningful personal goals. Each student will have the ability to assess his/her learning styles, skills, and interests; research post-secondary and career opportunities; track the college application process from start to finish, and learn about scholarships and financial aid.
The “Family Connection” component of Naviance offers a wide array of services and content, such as bulletins about programs, events, and other items of interest, multi-criteria college search, on-line transcript request capabilities, on-line counselor/teacher recommendation request capabilities, on-line forms and surveys, college acceptance data, and scheduled visits by college representatives. Students and parents can register for individual Family Connection accounts that can be accessed from any computer location at any time of day. Communication regarding guidance and planning information can be transmitted back and forth between students, parents, and counselors through this new resource. Please make sure we have the most up-to-date email account on record to ensure the smooth delivery of Naviance services. As freshmen, your students were trained to navigate Naviance. This year they will use Naviance to research careers and acquire a better understanding of how their interests and goals tie into them. Please use Naviance regularly; at http://connection.naviance.com/southpasadena
The PSAT will be given at South Pasadena High School in Spring 2016 (date TBD).
An important SPHS information is through the Aeries Browser Interface (ABI). Through the web, at parents.spusd.net (without the www), you can access and check your child’s demographic information, daily attendance, transcript, progress reports, and report cards in real time. You no longer have to wait for the hard copies to be sent home! To access the ABI, you need an email address entered into our system. Your password will be emailed to you if this is the first time your email address is entered into our system. If you have forgotten your password, changed your email, or are missing a password, please stop by the main office and complete our ABI information form. The main office will work on getting the password updated and emailed to you. Also, SPHS will be sending updates and reminders of important counseling and guidance news.
