<p style="tab-stops: list .5in"><strong><span style="font-family: 'Times New Roman'">Definition: </span></strong><span style="font-family: 'Times New Roman'">Simply stated, juxtaposition means placing things side-by-side for the purpose of comparison or contrast. In art this usually is done with the intention of bringing out a specific quality or creating an effect, particularly when two contrasting or opposing elements are used. The viewer's attention is drawn to the similarities or differences between the elements.</span></p>

<li><span style="font-family: 'Times New Roman'">Take photographs of two objects with the intent of comparing or contrasting them.</span></li>

<p><span style="font-size: 11.0pt; font-family: 'Times New Roman'">The letters need to be objects that were not originally intended to be letters.&nbsp; The letters need to be clear, in focus, juxtaposed against an uncluttered background.</span></p>

<p><span style="font-size: 11.0pt; font-family: 'Times New Roman'">Your document size should be 8x10 or 8.5x11 (Resolution/dpi @300).</span></p>

With the traditional self-portrait, you simply take a picture of yourself and show who you are and something about your life. I recommend using the timer on your camera. I would also like to see you experiment with using mirrors and other reflective surfaces. Please refer to <strong>“The Self-Portrait”</strong> handout for details. </span></p>
