Definition: Simply stated, juxtaposition means placing things side-by-side for the purpose of comparison or contrast. In art this usually is done with the intention of bringing out a specific quality or creating an effect, particularly when two contrasting or opposing elements are used. The viewer's attention is drawn to the similarities or differences between the elements.

Guidelines:

  1. Take photographs of two objects with the intent of comparing or contrasting them.
  2. The photographs must have at least two elements that contain strong visual weights.
  3. The viewer should construct meaning while looking at both photographs at the same time

Photographing

Each student will turn in a composition containing 26 images.  Each image will have a letter from the alphabet.  Each letter needs to be found, not created. 

The letters need to be objects that were not originally intended to be letters.  The letters need to be clear, in focus, juxtaposed against an uncluttered background.

Photoshop

Your document size should be 8x10 or 8.5x11 (Resolution/dpi @300).

You will need to resize each of the 26 images to be placed in your document; make sure you plan this out ahead of time, so they all fit and you won’t need to start again.

:  a portrait of oneself done by oneself

Your goal is to take many creative and interesting portraits of yourself. With the traditional self-portrait, you simply take a picture of yourself and show who you are and something about your life. I recommend using the timer on your camera. I would also like to see you experiment with using mirrors and other reflective surfaces. Please refer to “The Self-Portrait” handout for details.

You must take at least 10 photographs of yourself. You will turn in your BEST shot (not just a snapshot). Pay attention to composition, color, contrast, lighting, etc…

  • Your photo must fit on an 8.5” x 11” page either vertical or horizontal, sized to 300 dpi saved as a jpg file (large size). It does not have to be 8.5” x 11”, just sized to fit on the page.

1.  Choose a Strong Subject
Choose something with a strong and recognizable shape that will be interesting enough in its two dimensional form. 
2.  Lighting
Light should shine from the background and not the foreground.  Place your subject in font of a sunset or sunrise or any bright light. 
3.  Frame your image
Frame your shot so you are shooting with your subject n font of a nice plain, but bright background. 
4.  Make silhouetted shapes distinct and uncluttered 
Keep shapes separated.  Do not overlap multiple silhouettes.  If photographing people, profiles are more interesting and recognizable. 
 
  • Your photo mush fin on an 8/5"x11" page either vertical or horizontal, sized to 300 dpi saved as a jpg file (med size).  It does not have to be 8.5"x11", just sized to fit on that page.
