CAL STATE

*Most of this information is on the flyers I picked up during the session. Below are the facts highlighted by the Cal State representative during the session.

GENERAL:

-Cal State Sacramento was first campus. It was founded as a Teacher’s school, and Cal State schools still known for strong Education programs.

-Cal State specializes in “hands on” degrees like Education, Business, Engineering, and Nursing.

-Each campus may offer different degree programs so encourage students to look for the school that has their preferred major: for example, only Cal State Poly San Luis Obispo and Cal State Poly Pomona have architecture.

TESTING:

-3594—SAT code to have student’s scores automatically sent to ALL 23 Cal State schools

-Cal State accepts scores from both SAT and ACT, but there is not code for the ACT, so students must send ACT scores to the individual schools they are interested in.

ENTRANCE REQUIRMENTS:

-Hand-out (golden rod in color) has list of all entrance requirements for Cal State schools

-Cal State schools consider 2 sections of the SAT (math and science, I think. Check hand-outs to be sure). Cal State will mix and match highest scores from those sections regardless of the date they were taken.

-Minimum ACT/SAT scores and minimum GPA can change based on how the student performs in each. I.E. If GPA is higher, ACT/SAT can be lower, and visa versa (see back of gold sheet for details)

“IMPACTED” CAMPUSES:

-Of the 23 Cal State schools, 5 are “Impacted”, meaning these 5 campuses have more stringent entrance requirements. The 5 “Impacted” schools are Long Beach, San Diego, Pomona, Fullerton, and Cal State Poly San Luis Obispo.

-If you are local to these “Impacted” campuses, you only have to reach the minimum Cal State requirements to be admitted (see website for details on how close you must live for the less stringent requirements).

-If you do not live locally, you must contact each individual “Impacted” campus you wish to attend to find out their entrance requirements for that year as they are subject to change based on their applicant pool, enrolment needs, etc…

APPLICATION:

-Oct 1 to Nov 30 is primary application time (check hand outs to make sure this is accurate J)

-Application fee is $55 per campus

TUITION:

-$5000-6000 per year tuition (live at home/commuter)

-$18,000 per year to live on campus (tuition, room, board, etc..)

UC’s

*The representative for UC’s (UC Riverside) spoke VERY fast, so these notes may not be comprehensive. That’s my little disclaimer J

GENERAL:

-UC system has 9 campuses

-UCLA, Berkley, San Diego are considered the most competitive campuses in the system

-UC System is research based. There are lots of opportunities for students to be involved in research because of this.

-Each campus may offer different degree programs so encourage students to look for the school that has their preferred major: for example, Architecture is only at UCLA and Berkley. Only UC Irvine offers Criminology and Nursing.

-UC System has two system-wide scholarship programs: Regents Scholarship (100% tuition) and Chancellor’s Scholarship (75% tuition). The each individual campus offers other scholarship possibilities.

-All campuses offer Study Abroad programs. 32 different countries with programs for 3 to 6 months, or for full years. Applications are taken after freshman year.

TESTING:

-Accepts ACT and SAT

-Must be taken before December of Sr. year

-Will accept highest scores regardless of number of times test was taken

ENTRANCE:

-3.0 GPA on core classes (same list as Cal State)

-A-G class requirements-UC’s look at GPA from Sophomore and Junior classes. Sr year does count because admission is based on So and Jr year GPA, but admission is provisional until all Sr. classes are passed with a C average or better.

-Personal Statement—1000 word essay answer to 2 questions. The representative encouraged students to keep a file, or saved on a computer, accomplishments each year of high school, so when they are applying and writing the Personal Statement, they don’t forget what they have accomplished or been awarded, etc…

UC RIVERSIDE:

-UC Riverside has a program for Juniors called the Highlanders Scholarship Program. As a junior with a certain GPA (3.5, I think) and good SAT scores, students can pre-qualify for guaranteed admission and scholarship.

-UC Riverside will open a Med School in 2012, just in time for Jr’s and Sr’s who are pre-med to be the first students admitted (if they qualify, of course).
